Guest Posted August 22, 2006 Report Posted August 22, 2006 hi every 1, new to this forum.i was wondering have any of you had the misfortune of ur birds catching psitticosis, ive been flying for 9yrs and back 2 months a go i had 1 or 2 y/birds go down with this, cant understand how on earth i had it cos my lofts are well ventilated and i have flights on all!..of my cots. the vet examined the ill birds and gave me some anti biotics for them(which did nothing but cost me) .out of the 65 youngsters(all parted )from parents only 3 was showing signs of this.my birds would fly around the cot for over an hr and seemed fine, even had compliements off fellow flyers how good my birds this year was looking. a few more birds fell ill and at the time i didnt know it but me and my wife were starting to show symtoms of this.we were put on anti biotics for over a month ...during this time i took the massive discision to dispose of ALL my pigeons(as it stated on records that all birds who recover , wont be any good for breeding or racing).this years winners went as well(all binned)including stock birds with directs out of national winners as well. as i am on incapacity benefit these birds were mostly girft birds from fellow flyers around this area.i now have the massive task of starting up again and if any flyers know someone who has decent sprint birds for sale at a good price id be thankfull if u could give me a contact number .back last month i was 99% for packing it all in.but friends around me have persuaded me to give it another go. i have only been flying 9years but for the last 3-4 years i have been the old bird averages winner each year..including topping the fed , with only chance of scoring in a south wind.as my club is furthest north of our fed.birdage ave...5-6000 birds. sorry for this posting being long, look forward to future chats with you all...paul.
PIGEON_MAN Posted August 22, 2006 Report Posted August 22, 2006 HI PAUL,SO SORRY TO HEAR OF YOUR MISFORTUNE ALLTHOUGH I HAVE HEARD OF PSITTACOSIS IN PIGEONS BEFORE I BELIEVE IT IS ASSOCIATED WITH PARROTS MORE.I CAN IMAGINE HOW YOU MUST OF FELT HAVING TO DISPOSE OF ALL YOUR BIRDS BUT GLAD TO HEAR THAT YOU ARE GOING TO CARRY ON.THERE ARE A FEW FANCIER,S ON THE FORUM WHO ARE GIVING AWAY LATEBREDS PERHAPS THAT MIGHT BE AN ALTERNATIVE TO SPENDING OUT A LOT OF MONEY ON NEW STOCK WITH NO GUARENTEE THAT THEY WILL BREED YOU ANYTHING ANY GOOD.BEST OF LUCK ANYWAY LOOK FORWARD TO SEE HOW YOU GET ON.
