andy Posted August 27, 2006 Report Posted August 27, 2006 BIRDS SHOULD DO JUST ABOUT 40MPH TODAY INTO CENTRAL FED IF THIS MORNINGS 40 MILE TRAINING TOSS ANYTHING TO GO BY.
Guest Posted August 27, 2006 Report Posted August 27, 2006 Well, I know of two birds that ain't doing 40mph or anything near it! :'( Yours truly takes full responsibility. Thought holdovers a thing of the past and me basket water training was to be done next weekend.

IAN, YOUR NOT KIDDING ME ON YOU WERE GOING TO BASKET/WATER TRAIN YOUR PIGEONS AT THE SECOND LAST RACE OF THE SEASON, AS I SAID THE BIRDS WOULD DO 40MPH, AND THEY DID. THE FANCIERS AND BIRDS THAT WERE NOT ARE OBVIOUSLY NOT IN THE ZONE.......ALTHOUGH FAIRS FAIR YOU ONLY HAD 2 AWAY...
Guest Posted August 28, 2006 Report Posted August 28, 2006 Yep, guilty as charged. Routine hit for six with new job this year, couldn't find time to fit my young birds water training. Had planned to do it well before YB National. They are in the basket before they ever get out of the loft, Andy, and spend around an hour sitting in it outside the loft, watching the OBs in the garden. They are then taken out of it one at a time and given a chance to see the front of the loft and the way in to it, then 'thrown' in through the open doors.. This is the first year I have had a basket, was a wooden then aluminium box before that and couldn't hang a drinker on either of them. I used to water train the birds by using nest box fronts with drinkers hung on them, moving the fronts to different places around the loft, so the birds had to go looking for the water. Paired young birds were also shut in their boxes with drinkers hung on the outside. Thats why I have 16 drinkers .... now down at the clubhouse, for their use on marking nights.
andy Posted August 28, 2006 Report Posted August 28, 2006 IAN, FOR 20 YEARS I NEVER TRAINED THEM TO DRINK IN THE BASKETS, ONLY DONE IT THE LAST THREE YEARS & HAD FEW LOSSES WHEN SOME LOFTS HAMMERED ON HOT STICKY DAYS, DONT KNOW IF ANY COINCIDENCE BUT DEFINATELY WILL CONTINUE BASKETTING FOR 3 DAYS SOLID 2 WEEKS PRIOR TO RACING...GOOD LUCK..
