There was an article in the BHW 'this year' saying that this disease has developed (called it a syndrome) and now affects OBs too. Article claimed evidence that sick YB isn't really cured, virus simply breaks down into particles which 're-generate' when it becomes an OB and re-infects it.

Interestingly, one of the questions asked in the Health Forum was 'where does it come from' and one reply was 'the Old Birds'. Might be right!

youngbird sickness is so called because it was 1st discovered in youngbirds.a m8 of mine had the oldbird version..a few yrs back...but it was not severe as in youngbirds.i didnt have it this yr or last but had it for the 2 yrs previous....but not b4 that.

no one in my club had it this year...unless they didnt admit to having it?

we have a good vet (graeme smith)usk s wales...who has a massive list of flyers under his wing so to say.and he is always very helpful .

Would say hold on to your good (pigeon) vet with both hands.  :)

Good to see that his services are being used.

Would also like to see clubs or feds retaining 'local' pigeon vet services, think it will pay dividends for us in the future.

yes there is a cure?

an expensive method.

I lost alot of young birds:

the methods/programme is:

a. to inject the birds with paramixture injection.

b. wait and see if any changes.

c. To treat the young birds with anti worms.

d. see changes within one day.

e. no change then a coc tablet is given.

f. no change then canker tablet for the first day any change ok.

g. no change then it has internal canker which is given for further three days.

h. see the change.

at the same time the water is diluted with 7 in 1 . Which has a bit of everything but not strong.

Within or less then 14 days see the changes in all the birds.

I think the yb illness is due ti stree- basically leaving the parents and learning to service.

Some fanciers would say- break the neck is much quicker & cheaper- but the problem is still there.

The poramme is tried and tested.

Good luck

THERE HAVE BEEN FANCIERS ON THE FORUM WHO PUT UP REMEDIES THAT WORK WITHIN A COUPLE OF DAYS INSTEAD OF TRYING EVERYTHING UNDER THE SUN OVER FOURTEEN DAYS

the stuff i used (baytrox)made a massive difference within 3 days!!.....it cost me about £19. but boy it didnt half do the job!

Give cider vinegar every day in youngsters drinkers and prevent getting it rather than curing it. The main side effects are alkiline based anyway so acidify the crop and most problems are eliminated ecoli etc. Prevention is better than the cure.

Last two years I used cider vinegar all season for the babies and had no illness at all, this year for some stupid reason I didn't bother preferring to use some crappy product recommended to me intsead of using my tried and tested method. Well you guessed it untold ammounts of trouble like the rest in my area. I even used a cure and it bloody flared up again once i commenced training again when they were supposedly cured. Back to cider vinegar next year and I won't be swayed again by other recommendations from now on.

If I was to get it again though there are some good suggestions and advice on this website to take care of it.

we haven't had any problems since 1998,this year we have had problems.we have done all the same things so i don't know if you can prevent it.if your going to get it you get it!

the prob's we had were birds not hungry one or two not digesting corn and not flying.we didn't feed for 48 hours then started them on a diet mix increasing the amount daily while adding protien.

they are flying and looking well at the moment.

a friend from holland has told me a lot of fanciers there are vaccinating the young for paramyxovirus twice one month apart as a prevention and it's working.
