Gaz6ft5 Posted September 19, 2006 Report Posted September 19, 2006 greetings to All. hi guys im new to the racing pigeon scene and therefore looking for any advice or info for "mile pigeon racing" as ive just joined a miler racing paddock in Barnsley south yorks. im looking to start my loft off with sound birds but as much as ive tried i cant find any forums for milers "is this type of racing a dieing sport or wot" . the guys on the paddock have offered me birds but i would like to go with 1 bloodline or just fresh birds. like ive said previous any help you guys can give i'd be over the moon. best regards gary
Wiley Posted September 19, 2006 Report Posted September 19, 2006 welcoem to the forum, what sorta mile pigeon racing are you actually intending to fly(distances)
Gaz6ft5 Posted September 19, 2006 Author Report Posted September 19, 2006 thnx guys for the welcome. ill be flying just as it sounds "1 mile" there are 8 release spots around the local area with the paddock being in the middle. and the fastest bird wins simple as that really the pigeons on the paddock from release to landing take from 1min 2secs to 1min 15 secs so im looking for sprint birds. ive tried looking for "miler" forums but cant seem to find any "driving me nuts"
ACE LOFTS Posted September 19, 2006 Report Posted September 19, 2006 i dont realy think that ppl on this forum race milers the majority of them race pigeons from 50-500 mile's so i think u might be out of luck pal. but hey welcome to the forum.
PIGEON_MAN Posted September 19, 2006 Report Posted September 19, 2006 WILEY I BELIEVE THE RACING DISTANCE THAT GAZ IS INTENDING TO FLY IS AS HE SAYS A MILE,THIS SORT OF RACING GOES BACK YEARS AND WAS VERY POPULAR UP NORTH I THINK, WHAT BASICALLY HAPPENS IS YOU HAVE LOADS OF GUYS LINED UP AT THE START WITH THEIR PIGEON IN A BASKET ON THE FLOOR,AT THE GIVEN SHOUT ALL THE BIRDS ARE RELEASED AND THEY FLY IN A STRAIGHT LINE TO A EMPTY BASKET WHICH THE GUYS MATE AS READY THE OTHER END SOME DISTANCE AWAY,ANYTHING UP TO A MILE I THINK.THE FIRST BIRD INTO THEIR RESPECTIVE BASKET AND THE FLAP CLOSED UP IS THE WINNER.I THINK THATS SOMEWHERE NEAR AYE GAZ.
PIGEON_MAN Posted September 19, 2006 Report Posted September 19, 2006 GAZ SEEMS FROM YOUR LAST POSTING IT IS DIFFERANT NOW TO HOW I KNEW IT.
Gaz6ft5 Posted September 19, 2006 Author Report Posted September 19, 2006 hi Tony well m8 that is how it was done years ago m8 when my dad was a young lad and he was helping my grandad fly his pigeons. but spot on these days the pigeons are released at a set time in an order which is drawn from a hat then each guy releases his pigeon at the set time then every other guy releases at a minute interval. your parntner is waiting back at the paddock with the hen in his hand ready to tempt the cock down to land when it lands time stops. when all pigeons have been released the bird with the fastest time wins timings range for the mile from 1min 2secs to 1min 15secs. its all about the sprint
jimmy_bulger Posted September 19, 2006 Report Posted September 19, 2006 hi gaz. its short's your after by the sound of it you can give the secretary of the short distance union (S.D.U.) a phone call i will try and get the number for you in a few minutes ,jimmy.
PIGEON_MAN Posted September 19, 2006 Report Posted September 19, 2006 WE DO HAVE SO CALLED SPRINT PIGEONS IN OUR TYPE,S OF RACING BUT I,M NOT SURE THEY WOULD BE BETTER THAN THE BIRDS THAT HAVE BEEN USED TO THAT SOUGHT OF RACING,I BELIEVE THE GUYS YEARS AGO USED TO CALL THEM MILERS WEATHER THEY ARE A DIFFERANT BREED I DONT KNOW BUT AFTER A FEW YEARS OF BREEDING AND RACING THAT WAY WITH SOME OF TODAYS RACERS I SUPPOSE THEY WOULD ADAPT.

jimmy white Posted September 20, 2006 Report Posted September 20, 2006 WELCOME GAZ,, DONT KNOW MUCH ABOUT MILERS, BUT REMEMBER BEING IN LIVERPOOL AT DOVECOTE PARK WHEN I WAS ABOUT 10 [JUST A FEW YEARS AGO ;D] AND WATCHED THIS GUY TRAINING HIS MILERS, I USED TO MEET HIM THERE EVERYDAY SOMETIMES 3 TIMES A DAY, AND JUST TO WATCH THESE BIRDS WERE AMAZING , THEY MADE A BEE LINE 3 FT ABOVE THE GROUND [NO CIRCLING] THROUGH THE TREES IN THE PARK , OVER THE MAIN ROAD, JUST MISSING THE CARS THEN SKIMMED OVER THE ROOF TOP , AND THAT WAS THEM AWAY , I REMEMBER THEY WERE SMALL STREET LIKE BIRDS , WHEN AT THAT TIME IN SCOT. IT WAS ALL BIG BLOOD REDS AND MEALLIES WITH GREAT BIG WATTLES AND REMEMBER AT THAT TIME AS A LAD, NEVER SEEING BIRDS LIKE THEM B4, BUT BY GOLLY THEY SHIFTED
Gaz6ft5 Posted September 21, 2006 Author Report Posted September 21, 2006 thnx for the warm welcome guys+girlie well ive manage to track down some flyers in middlebrough, liverpool and wigan so far im just waiting for the 2 guys who go there to come back off thier hol's and they'll take me along. ive watched this sort of flying since i was a young lad but never got into it but i do agree some of these birds are amazing the way they fly at such a speed. i had to laugh today though i was watching the guys train thier birds and this 1 bird landed short of the paddock and walked into the paddock the guy was pulling his hair out screaming and swearing at the pigeon. "probly cos we were all laughing at it"
