hi i have been looking through the bhw and talking to friends recently and come to see that pigeon racing is really dying as a pastime , instead its a get rich quick for retailers and breeders , in my eyes the true pigeon fancier that once sat infront of his loft waiting for his birds to trap now waits for the club to sell them because he cant afford to keep up with the prices of timing equipment .

i started this cos i have been told in my town 3 fliers are giving up racing cos there club is going digital and they cant afford to ( 2 been flying 50 years )

thnx for reading , rockinrick :(

Rick,

I didn't think ETS had been approved in England yet. Most of our club has ETS but some are still using T3's so there is no need to leave the sport, just because some are buying ETS

THEY CAN'T MAKE THE FLIERS GO DIGITAL  CAN THEY ? WHY SHOULD THEY LEAVE OR ARE THERE OTHER REASONS THEY WANT TO LEAVE ?

My view is that the sport needs more publicity, if I mention to anyone that I keep pigeons they all reply with 'uh, flying rats' and that gives us all a bad name.

I thinking we could all do something to publicise our sport in some way or another.

I was reading up on the web about belgian pigeon flyers and children in belgium are tought about keeping pigeons like american kids are tought baseball.

1 in every 100 belgians keep pigeons. :)

I started doing school visits and talks years ago and had one or two youngsters take up pigeon racing but in the last 10 years none have emerged to takew up the sport. You cant switch it on or of when they feel like it.

IF YOU DON'T GET ANY FUN OUT OF IT IT'S TIME TO GIVE THEM UP.

WHY DO THE CLUB NOT APPLY TO THE GRANTS FOR ALL FUND

IF EXECPTED THEY COULD BUY THE CLOCKS FOR ALL THE MEMBERS

WORTH A GO

I KNOW OF A CLUB NEAR US THAT HAVE DONE THIS.

GOOD LUCK TO THEM AND HOPE THAT THERE CLUB MATES GET TOGETHER AND

SORT THIS OUT FAIRLY.

WOULD JUST LIKE TO SAY YES THIS SPORT IS STILL FUN,

CANNOT BEAT THAT FEELING I HAD LAST WEEKEND WHEN I SPOTTED OUR FIRST

BIRD LIKE A DOT IN THE SKY,  AND THEN IT DROPPED AS IF IT HAD BEEN SHOT,

WHAT A SIGHT THAT IS  SENT SHIVERS DOWN MY SPINE,

THEN THE ICEING ON THE CAKE WHEN THE CLOCKS WHERE READ,  TAKING 1st CLUB

10th FED.

thnx for comments re, flyers , i think they leaving mainly due to club changing / bird flu and cost of equipment , it was mentioned to me that they had to go with the times and keep up but why should they ?

after all they are ones and more that kept the sport going thru the years . i think its changed and not for the better .

cheers rockinrick

NUMBERS OR A FANCY ETS WONT WIN YOU A RACE AT 500MLS,THAT IS WHERE A LOT OF 'OLD TIMERS' WANT TO BE ON THE RESULT.I HAVE READ OTHER THREADS ON HERE WHERE SHORT (AND FED) RACES ARE USED AS A TOSS,A LOT OF OLD FANCIERS WILL NEVER CHANGE ,IE,WHIDOWHOOD,ROUNDABOUT,DARKNESS YOUNGSTERS ETC,FEEDING ETC.SO WHAT,THAT IS THERE CHOICE.THING IS THEY HAVE THE SAME RIGHTS AS EVERYBODY ELSE,NOBODY HAS TO LEAVE OUR SPORT DUE TO PROGRESS.AS SOON AS EVERY FANCIER REALISES THIS THEN THE BETTER IT WILL BE .NOBODY HAS TO FEAR PROGRESS

WE NEED ALL FANCIERS TO WANT TO STAY IN OUR SPORT,WE DONT HAVE TO DRIVE THEM OUT FROM WITHIN,THERE IS ENOUGH OUT THERE FOR THAT

I THINK IF IT WAS NOT STILL A BUZZ OR FUN I WOULD STILL BE IN BED  FROM THE FIRST TO THE LAST RACE I CAN'T SLEEP AS I AM LIKE A KID GOING ON A TRIP

Think lot of the older fliers have seen it become less of a pastime over the years and it has become big breeders big dealers big team fliers and big money wonder how many of them would stay in the sport if they were flying team of 20 birds with no money in it

Your right there Rose.

Still its always funny when the old bloke or woman who loves their birds and has the skills beats the mob flyer with all his money and helpers

it depends how you look at 'fun', my neighbour races in same club as me and I beat him every week, which to me is fun, but to him, seeing the birds fly home is fun and he says the winning don't matter.

HE'S RIGHT SEEING THE BIRDS FLY HOME IS BY FAR THE BEST BIT, WATCHING THEM DROP IN , NOTHING TO BEAT IT WHETHER YOU WIN OR NOT

Thats my 15 yr old son to a tee! He was ready for the next weeks race by a tuesday lol. People should only leave when there is no more enjoyment in it for themselves and not before. Clubs should do more to help juniors and pensioners that are finding the cost of change too much to bare, as they will have been the ones keeping clubs going through good and bad times.
