Tony C Posted November 15, 2006 Report Posted November 15, 2006 I see a lot of photos posted on here of stock cocks not so many of stock hens. That begs the question, what do you value more, a good breeding cock or good breeding hen? Your thoughts please.
Wiley Posted November 15, 2006 Report Posted November 15, 2006 personally i think you have to have both cocks and hens, good cocks and good hens are equal in value if they breed winners, they both rely on each other
Guest speckled Posted November 16, 2006 Report Posted November 16, 2006 ;D well tony takes 2 to breed a winner ;D ;D ;D so it equal for me unless :) i wont to have a all lesbo loft lol ;D ;D ;D Speck
jimmy white Posted November 16, 2006 Report Posted November 16, 2006 found the hens to be the most important, but still takes two ;D ;D ;D
Tony C Posted November 17, 2006 Author Report Posted November 17, 2006 Do you get the same ratio of good breeding cocks to hens ?
jimmy white Posted November 17, 2006 Report Posted November 17, 2006 i have found a good breeding hen produces winners more regularly than cocks , but maybe more importantly , in my opinion, having a good breeding pair are really quite hard to come by ,and worth their weight in gold,, i see in the poll,,,, sorry better let folk see for themselves ;D ;D ;D
westy Posted November 18, 2006 Report Posted November 18, 2006 i say both but realy the hen because she lays the eggs
Wiley Posted November 18, 2006 Report Posted November 18, 2006 i say both but realy the hen because she lays the eggs but the eggs wouldnt be fertile if the cock wasnt there
Guest speckled Posted November 19, 2006 Report Posted November 19, 2006 ;D lol westy i agree with Wiley. its take to to tango, lol ;D if the cock wasent there then egg would not be fertile, :B if the hen wasent there the cock would not have nothing to fertilise..,& i never went to collage. ;D ;D ;D its the golden pair ya wont ;D ;D ;D ;D Speck :X :X
Wiley Posted November 19, 2006 Report Posted November 19, 2006 this ones a bit like wat came first the chicken or the egg
superstar Posted November 19, 2006 Report Posted November 19, 2006 Its a combination of the two, I rotate my pairs reguarly and some pairings work while others dont, yet when a pairing that didnt work gets changed they can both produce excelent racers with different partners. Blood also matters and the Apple never falls far from the tree, line breeding of a good family of pigeons is in my eyes essential for continued success as it will always increase the % of winning birds over crosses in the long term.
velo99 Posted November 19, 2006 Report Posted November 19, 2006 Most of the performance genes come from the cock bird. He contributes more genetic material than the hen. I raise rollers and the cock is definitely more important than the hen to a certain degree. The depth and quality of roll are usually contributed by the cock bird. This is my opinion formed by reading and observing my birds. I reserve the right to change my mind. lol v99
