superstar
Try contacting these people, Sinderins Sheiron House, Memus Forfar, Angus DD8 3TY. You can get a model that switches between fluorescent tubes which cant be dimmed but are cheap to run for long periods to ordinary light bulbs for the dimming down bit. I have one from years ago when I used to keep Budgerigars and found it to be an excelent item.
GROVEHOMER
Thanks everyone, You've given me plenty to work with. I've used an ordinary household dimmer switch in the past, trouble was, the light was a bit too bright at its min setting and the birds sometimes wouldn't settle (even though I dimmed down over approx one hour) Ideally I'd like one that I can press a button when I leave the loft and thats me finished for the evening while the light level goes down very steadily to nothing....I don't want any nest box fights while I'm watching the footie blissfully unaware that the babies off my best birds are being mullered. :'(
Chatrace
Just put main lights on a timer and have a small nightlight pluged in on another circet that will stay on when the rest go out. I try to locate it near the water so they can get a drink 24x7 when they are having YBs
