jase Posted January 30, 2009 Report Posted January 30, 2009 hi guys, i am in the process of building a small breeding aviery for 1 pair, of valencian pouters , spanish theft pigeons here is some pics of it dont laugh i made this out of a old ute canopy , and then it was a cocky cage :B it is only 8 foot long, and 3 and a half foot wide, but should be okay for a pair ? is it also possible to keep a pair together all year ? or to hard on the hen ? in the house section i am going to use some flat steel for the floor, and some type of timber ? on the flight part, and cover the whole roof flight and all with a tin roof , what would the best type of floor to use timber wise ? iam useing timber so it wont be so hot here in the summer , we are in a heat wave at the moment :'( something that will last out in the weather ? and will hold my 90 kg frame :B regards jase
pjc Posted January 30, 2009 Report Posted January 30, 2009 3/4" ply would be your best for the floor and whatever you can get hold of for the front, it doesn't matter wether you use ply, feather board, tongue & groove etc, just give it a couple of coates of preservative and it'll be weather proof. I would also put some ventilation in the tin at the back and maybe top to allo for air flow. Phil
OLDYELLOW Posted January 30, 2009 Report Posted January 30, 2009 the gauge of the wire will allow rodents in your loft in hotter countrys you may want to use upvc in place of wood as it doesnt rot as for the floor a mesh floor off the ground could be of benifit to your birds
kirky Posted January 30, 2009 Report Posted January 30, 2009 the gauge of the wire will allow rodents in your loft in hotter countrys you may want to use upvc in place of wood as it doesnt rot as for the floor a mesh floor off the ground could be of benifit to your birds i think the snakes will be a big problem for you with that size mesh.
OLDYELLOW Posted January 30, 2009 Report Posted January 30, 2009 i think the snakes will be a big problem for you with that size mesh. well they'll sort the rodents out ;D ;D ;D ;D
jase Posted January 30, 2009 Author Report Posted January 30, 2009 hi the mesh on there is just to hold the smaller gauge wire on the front , i used that to go around the door , and will cover it with small gauge wire, what is upvc ? also i have heard differnt people talk about mesh floors, what do you think of them ? jase
OLDYELLOW Posted January 30, 2009 Report Posted January 30, 2009 upvc is white plastic quite cheap and can clad the structure same stuff used for windows mesh floors will keep the birds of there own droppings however at the time i didnt take into consideration what temperatures drop to at your neck of the woods as could be a problem ( have visions of little boys getting there tongues stuck to lamposts ) whats the lowest your teperatures drop to or are you in the parts that stay above freezing ?
jase Posted January 30, 2009 Author Report Posted January 30, 2009 sometimes it gets down to zero , and frosts , but at the moment we are in a heat wave, in the 40's all this week
OLDYELLOW Posted January 30, 2009 Report Posted January 30, 2009 sometimes it gets down to zero , and frosts , but at the moment we are in a heat wave, in the 40's all this week mesch floor should be fine its sub zero temperatures id worry about
jimmy white Posted January 31, 2009 Report Posted January 31, 2009 looks good to me,, your climate being so different to ours,, probably best advice from someone in ozzy maybe our own lennut tar could help/advice ,, or any fancy pigeon keeper,, my own opinion would be,, looks ideal for the hot weather , but maybe sheilded slightly in winter,, but certainly fresh air does no harm and as other posters have suggested,, beware of any un-wanted preditors that might be able to get in good luck with the breeding of your pair,,, maybe you could let us know how things go,, would be most interesting
Guest youngzimmy Posted January 31, 2009 Report Posted January 31, 2009 talking of preditors i had a mate a long time ago who was bothered with rats and mice he stripped his loft down took off all boarding including roof and floor put 8x2 sheets of plasterers wire lath on all sections roof floor sides front and back reboarded the loft and built it back up ligned the inside it was the only rodent proof loft i ever saw so if you want one that is what you have to do
