flew birds that were given to me at first, they flew decent but i wanted more than that, end of that year i got some busschearts and then some janssens from louella, then still only flew moderate. Then one day i was last in the club comming 31st with a blue hen and one pigeon bloke commented that i would not win a race while i had an hole in my ass, that really gutted me that night,so it kinda woke me up as i swore to kick his ass the following year,i bought the book "loft ,stock & Barrel from blackpool year 1993 and put it all into practice what i read and learnt over the winter months, that year on widowhood with yearling i won a few races in club and 2bird clubs and with the youngsters i got 52 cards that year winning 5 out of 8 races including other prizes aswell also winning the 2 bird club nearly every week, never really looked back since, anyway that same fancier never said nowt to me again and later backed up. ;D  its not always the birds that are bad,but lack of knoledge from the fancier.Les

in my first year, I did nothing then in my second year I had 3 x 1st club,2 x 1st fed, 1st in the mighty border amal and an rpra award.

unfortunately, I've not done a lot since, we have young children now and they take all my time.

I had 1 x 4th club in 2006.

Going with my old theory that you need TIME to motivate the birds and "yourself"  ;D ;D ;D

i'm hoping 2007 will be different for me I'm getting the kids a bit more involved, so hopefully I can spend more time with the birds and the kids may want to have a go themselves?

Threw the pedigree's in the bin put every bird down the road till we had a quarter left same with young birds then two years later we had 2 out of 3 at 634 miles and 21st sec 280th NFC to boot. We aint top flyers but I don't know anyone round here who can get 'em at 500 miles + better than us

Health comes first though

I think it takes about 4/5 years to build a good team of birds and you will make mistakes along the way but if you learn from them thats the main thing leave the trying of new things to the old hands and keep it simple try and befriend an old master you will find they are only to ready to help it gives them as much pleasure when you win as it will you (well exept for the first one)keep at it this might be the season you break ur duck and the there will be no stopping you GOOD LUCK

My first season I won the last 2 races  ( 300's ) but it was the birds not me once I broke out I Killed the next year I moved this year and did very well I won 6 or 8 I dont know but this year is going to be wierd as I only  have yearlings and late hatches to compete in old birds so I raised about 60 late hatches and have about 30 yearlings if I can hold it together this year I will be a terror from here on out I always send ALL my yearlings on the 600 and have been breeding from those lines so there is where I will come up short I plan to mob them to 350 and then use the yearlings to get me on out to 600 I should be able to hold on at the distance and don't have any worries about using the late hatches out to 500 if it is a fast day if it is a tough day I will have to cut back on numbers

;D thanks  Frank , will crack at it , fingers crossed !                    andy 8)

agree - you will make a lot of mistakes whilst you learn about your birds and yourself and develop good judgement, it will cost you some good birds perhaps. you need to decide also what you want to compete at and plan for that - advice is helpful but can confuse you too, keep listening but make up your own mind- the change for me was focusing on quality and not quantity and reducing the amount of birds to race and sticking to a system

A thing i found helpfull is to set your self goals say pick a fancier who does allright at the distance you fancy dont tell anyone and try and beat him then up the anti untill you beat them all this saves a bit of disapointment rember learning about pigeons is like serving an apprenticeship  LOOK/LISTEN LEARN .the good fanciers will tell you but some novices dont listen

My first couple years were crap.  I then swallowed my pride and asked one of the old flyers what I was doing wrong, he then informed me that I was doing everything wrong and then started giving me advice.  Don't know how long I would have stayed with it without my mentor.  He has been gone now for many years and I still miss his advice.  When he first told me I was doing everything wrong I thought he was probably stretching things but I know now that he was right on.   Ed   ;D
