Lightning McQueen Posted February 21, 2007 Report Posted February 21, 2007 Whats everyones favourite memory, of this wonderful sport of ours?? Mine started as relief at first when watching our good cock "33" last year from Fougeres then to find out he had won the Club, Fed & Combine for the 2nd time in 2006. He previously won the combine approx 6 weeks earliers from Yeovil. Happy days..
Guest Vic Posted February 21, 2007 Report Posted February 21, 2007 Happy memories to me, (and plenty of 'em) was in my early days. Success had never been acheived, but the challenge was there, 40 member club, flying within a mile, I served my apprentenship, in the pigeon game, amongst dedicated "skint" fanciers. I aint painted the sky yet , but still hope to' ( club wise since, I hold the records, But what is club racing?) That will be the next subject. Vic.
jimmy white Posted February 21, 2007 Report Posted February 21, 2007 happiest memories for me was the" old meally" the bird had scored well from 360 miles as a yearling ,,all that winter my father spoke about this bird and was confident the bird would score at 5o5 miles [never stopped going on about it ] the following year my father past away in april 1968,, in july the old meally was 4th open in a very hard race in the east of scot continental club 3,000 birds winning £98 2 shillings and sixpence,,,,a man and a pigeon and a race i will never forget, this bird went on to score 9 times from over 500 miles [no gold awards then his last national position was from averanches 505 miles at 9 years old, i only wish my father had have lived to seen that.
MITIE man Posted February 22, 2007 Report Posted February 22, 2007 48 x views, yet only 2 replies Obviously not many Happy memories out there?
westy Posted February 22, 2007 Report Posted February 22, 2007 when a bloke in my club come around and said my pigeons where sh*t to my face then starit after went to a locals and told them, and nearly beat him evrey week apart from when i was last. also when i blocked a hawk from having one of my pigeons it flew into me and i punched it away.
stevebelbin Posted February 22, 2007 Report Posted February 22, 2007 Had a pigeon blob on for our longest channel race, and had the feeling he would win, as he had won 2 previous distance races. It turned out to be a stinker of a race, no fed birds home on the night, so I camped out on the board of the loft, as I had a feeling he would be back early. And true to form he came clapping down the line of flight, did 3 rounds of the gardens and in to his hen. What a buzz, cant beat seeing birds come in from that distance, just need one on the day now ;D ;D ;D
Guest Posted February 22, 2007 Report Posted February 22, 2007 my happy memmories were when a flying friend of mine of 60+yrs old(now dead)spoke out in the club im in, and stated to the other members that i (being only mediocre at flying)at the time would be the one to beat next season which was laughed at in a friendly but obviously (as if) kind of manner!. around xmas time(a few weeks later) he passed away in scotland on a xmas holiday with his wife which shocked our club. that coming season i took 8 of the 12 trophies in old birds and 7 of the 12 in y/birds,also topping the welsh north road fed by 22 yrds, amongst other fed positions. up untill 2006 i took o/bird aves each year for the last 3-4yrs...and runner up in 2006(as some will know i did not race y/bs).that fond memory of him still stands out in my mind and i often think back and think wot he would be thinking at his premonition of me that year..(r.i.p) R L ...paul
Tony C Posted February 22, 2007 Report Posted February 22, 2007 My fathers reaction when I told him I'd topped the combine.............Priceless
Guest TAMMY_1 Posted February 22, 2007 Report Posted February 22, 2007 has to be the sight of the first bird we got home in our first race about 10 years ago, and replies are not compulsory MITIE man, you only reply to what you want to
MITIE man Posted February 22, 2007 Report Posted February 22, 2007 Nobody mentioned COMPULSORY Tammy :K) Just thought would comment on an open post
Sally McQueen Posted February 22, 2007 Report Posted February 22, 2007 I've only been in the sport 5 years and the first few years i didn't take much notice and had 2 children so was pregant for 18 months. So my memories so far are of breeding for the first time. I like the breeding season some people don't. I love knowing how many eggs we got and looking at the babys. Also the first young bird race, line of flight over our house and the thousands of birds that came over was really exciting. The buzz of seeing ur bird pull out. We have now just moved house and building a new loft, so i'm sure we will have many more happy memories to come.

Guest Posted February 22, 2007 Report Posted February 22, 2007 Yep think it was as the new kid in the club (long ago) sitting listening to the stories pigeon men told and how they could always see the funny side of things. Like the neighbour on the tenement communal green who hung out her washing every Saturday just when the birds were due home. Eventually got to Josie and he told her: 'Aye maybe frighten them missus, but sure won't dazzle them"
Wiley Posted February 22, 2007 Report Posted February 22, 2007 Yep think it was as the new kid in the club (long ago) sitting listening to the stories pigeon men told and how they could always see the funny side of things. Like the neighbour on the tenement communal green who hung out her washing every Saturday just when the birds were due home. Eventually got to Josie and he told her: 'Aye maybe frighten them missus, but sure won't dazzle them" have to say this memories of pigeon fanciers stories of the past in there younger days are brillant and a great memory of mine, especially when Wing Commander Bill Thomspon tells them, '' i'll kill the man who threw the monkey" Some of the stories you hear are amazing. I think the best feeling although ive won the federation a gd few times and won the combine. I dont think anything beats the experience when Greedy Guts topped the combine. He seemed to go in slow motion, he was very low down and come over the neighbours owl shed and landed straight into his box, done 3 spins in his nest box, till which when i put my hand in his box he tried to have a wrestle with me till i grabbed the rubber while still fighting of his leg and into the clock. And rest assured when greedy guts has a fight with ya he can cause damage, many a time he tore the skin lucky on that day he never.
Dave A Posted February 22, 2007 Report Posted February 22, 2007 my happiest memory was on my first race with yb's in 04 sent all 6 i had and was very nervous, but in came my first race heart pounding i caught her and clocked her in closely followed by the other 5 (within 20 mins) she came last in our club 30 mins behind the 1st bird but i got them home 2nd wek i got them all back in again anyway sat came in she came again listened to all the times because my clock was opened last and i knew i was 2 mins before the first bird and was thinking she had done really well as she came from the north ( i race south road) but i came 12th coz i give most of the club 10 mile overfly but she was the first bird clocked in my eyes. one day before basketing for the 3rd race i got a yb come back after being lost of a 15 mile toss 7 weeks earlier looked ok so it went in the basket come sat morning the damn thing was first home and ended up 5th club and that has been my best result to dat
tubbles Posted February 22, 2007 Report Posted February 22, 2007 My best is not topping the fed but being second fed...... We had a holdover from Wincanton, Sunday birds liberated into light east wind and i clocked a Dark chequer hen, won club then found that i had topped federation ( what a thrill ) then two weeks later and this is the one, birds held over at Wincanton, Liberated Sunday into light east wind and a minute after the time i clocked the Fed topper A dark chequer Busschaert hen through the door like a bullet. Chuffed to bits i went over to my mates and he was nowhere near my time, i told him that it was my Fed topper again went back home and looked at her again only to find out that it was not my fed topper but her nestmate. This was my biggest thrill because while I had won races before, I had never had a cock that bred two seperate winners for me..... wow a family. The sire was also Grand sire to a fed topper over the water for me. and of course it is still a great thrill every raceday seeing one coming in because you never know..... even if other birds have gone over THEY may not have gone straight in. ;D
Guest jason Posted February 22, 2007 Report Posted February 22, 2007 after spending a week preparing a van reet cock for Portland (219 mile) race, turning up at club someone said this cock was rubbish and wouldn't win a thing. Next day (Saturday) 1st club, 1st fed, 1st in the mighty Border Amal 2200+ birds, made my day. Absolutely fantastic to turn up at the club and rub it in this blokes face ;D Jason
square_peg Posted February 22, 2007 Report Posted February 22, 2007 up there with the best has to be last year ,when in his first season back in the doo's my son, then aged 15 won the first young bird race of the season .it was a stinker of a race and he won it easy ,oh ,i took some ribbing in the club for letting a 15yr old beat me.untill i pointed out to them that he also beat all of them and most of the fed. 8)
mickmcgrevy Posted February 22, 2007 Report Posted February 22, 2007 You can't beat the feeling you get when you get a bird from 500 mile plus on the day. What a lovely site that speck is out in the distance when you realise it is one of yours just home. GREAT lol Mick
Guest Vic Posted February 23, 2007 Report Posted February 23, 2007 Memories? Most happiest have always came from the 500 mile point. I have won them in all conditions, smashes, blow homes, almost dark, first light, whatever. I have always had TWO clocks set for what I term the "big one". In fact, I have won more prizes from the longest race than any other racepoint, including inland racepoints.Yes Mick, I certainly know what you mean, thinking back can bring tears to the eyes, Yes! this is magic , and will always be for VIc.
jimmy white Posted February 24, 2007 Report Posted February 24, 2007 ;D ;D ;D ;D happy memories ;D ;D ;D sore memories ,, we formed our own wee private club as lads,,, no clocks [no money ;D] getting the old rubbers from" the real pigeon men"we had about ten young lads in it , streeters , half tumblers you name it ;D we had to run to a centre point [the chemist shop] [not in it ;D ;D ;D] first to arrive with rubber won the race,, i cycled with[ my would be winning rubber ;D] and a big stick came poking out a hedge , through the spokes ,, over the handlebars ,,,went hame greetin ;D ;D ;D,,,,,,, the other two mates brothers ;D ran with rubber , the one without the rubber got there first, then somebody else got there b4 the other brother who had the rubber ;D ;D ;D good scrap that day ;D ;D ;D
