Picture the scene

Saturday morning soon comes around, sun breaking through the clouds, slight chill in the air as the dew lays silently on the grass. You ring the ‘lib-line’ to see if the birds are up yet, your nerves are on fire, hoping that you prepared them properly for the race in question. ‘Ring back in an hour’ the lib-line says, all you can think is ‘the skies clear here’ what they waiting for.

You go up to the loft, scratch your head, as it’s still sore from all the ale you supped last night, after basketing the birds for today’s race. You clean your loft out ready for the birds to return, the butterflies start turning in your stomach and the adrenalin starts pumping, you’ve just got time for that lovely cup of tea before ringing the lib-line again…………The birds are up, light south west wind, nice steady ‘blow home’. You break into that bacon & egg sandwich for breakfast, as the dew starts to dry from the ground, and the sun breaks onto the front of the loft.

‘They won’t be far away now’ you take the clock upto the loft, praying you’ll have today’s winner, you sit down on that old rickety chair, ready, nerves are shot at,you start shaking with the adrenalin pumping through your veins. You spot something in the corner of your eye, is it a race bird, Yes, a little dot in the sky, wings folded as it jets down to be back in its home. You rush in behind it, remove its rubber ring…………It doesn’t matter if the bird won or lost………..Thats pigeon racing, The greatest sport in the world!!!!!!!!!  And it all starts in about 7 weeks.

Hope your ready

Lol at least someone can eat on raceday, I have raced for a number of years now and can't eat before the birds are home lol i still feel sick before they get there (and sometimes after they have finally got there  :-/ ) But hey, youre right not long to go now, the countdown is on and of course it goes without saying that I'm gonna win the first race but if i didn't think that what would be the point. I can't remember the last race i won actually but i'm sure this is going to be my year  ;D

We are the same as you Paul we are not starting till YB's as we moved to our new house in November and our loft is still not finished.  We have our stock birds and breeding in our garage, wont be long now. Lightning McQueen cant eat on a race day he spends most of the morning on the loo.

Looking foward to racing

Funny how it affects us in different ways. Inland means nothing to me, but over the water! I just can't settle till we've clocked, and at 600mls plus that can be overnight. What a nightmare but its what I love.

Good luck to everyone for 2007 and may all your racing wishes come true!!!

How many times have you tried to shout everything in, from pigeons going over to starlings in the distance that look like pigeons diving down and at times even a fly too close to your face makes the shout almost escape. I live in Merseyside and the start of the youngbird season is a nightmare here because of the flying ants. If the saturday is sunny god help us because we have the ants in the foreground then there are starlings and other birds trying to eat them, if a pigeon comes amongst them it is almost invisible but great fun all the same, good luck to all of the new starters in here.
