Bobthegas Posted March 2, 2007 Report Posted March 2, 2007 Can anyone explain the reason why i loose birds of the loft, i hear experienced flyers say they never loose birds of the loft,so what am i doing wrong? Last week i let out 14 young birds, they flipped around fine, yesterday i lost 1, today 4. On average in the last two years i must have lost around 12 from the loft. Its now getting me down!!!!!!!!!!! Bob
tubbles Posted March 2, 2007 Report Posted March 2, 2007 These experienced fanciers that you speak of are telling porkies cos everyone loses birds. It is very rare these days to keep all you have bred right up until the first training toss. You will hear all sorts of stories about "I sorted some out that didn't come up to scratch" but this is sometimes bull****, people don't like to admit that they are just pigeon fanciers and they have no idea why they go missing. Ask these so called experienced flyers to show all their rings that they got from the club and you will see some missing.
madmaxlofts Posted March 2, 2007 Report Posted March 2, 2007 we all lose them mate just one ov those things it only takes them to get into another batch and youll loose them occasionaly , or it only takes something to spook them ie a cat or sparrow hawk and youll loose them the trouble is people dont report them so you never get them back
THE FIFER Posted March 2, 2007 Report Posted March 2, 2007 don't believe what u hear, its a common thing to lose youngsters off the loft, could be something bothering them, cats, or hawks in the area, or nothing other than they just get lost or get in with another batch of birds, it is a common thing and happens to us all , some can be lucky and not lose them but its all in the game now. so its hard but nothing u are doing wrong.
ray Posted March 3, 2007 Report Posted March 3, 2007 have to agree with the rest people tell you anything we all lose them i lost 3 last year off the loft and i have allotments all around me and are never reported, people dont report them because there worried in case the owner tells them to keep it, and if they dont want it wont collect it, then your names muck for repoting them to the union, but the odd time could be a sparrow hawk, ray
Guest TAMMY_1 Posted March 3, 2007 Report Posted March 3, 2007 The biggest problem I was having recently was a ginger cat that would not stay away from the lofts and I blame this for causing some of the older birds to lay later because they were being spooked all the timeand I knew if this problem was not resolved before I started letting young birds out they would have been scared witless and would have lost a lot of them, harmony was restored after said cat went on holiday ;D ;D

Guest Posted March 3, 2007 Report Posted March 3, 2007 I agree that you always lose some 'off the top' and also agree with the reasons given. Think it is thro inexperience when they get mixed up with a bunch of more experienced ones and taken 'miles' out of their territory. But location may have a bearing, as I and others here have experience of youngsters ending up 'just' on the other side of the River Forth, in Fife, North East of us, that can't seem to to make it back from 'spitting distance' away. If they are up say 50/100 feet in air here, surely they can see Fife & beyond? Is it just down to these birds lacking homing instinct?
THE FIFER Posted March 3, 2007 Report Posted March 3, 2007 i think we can be breeding the hominng instink out of them, as bruno says they can see their suroundings from where they are when lost, its getting young birds if away from their loft or tierd in a race and they see a batch of birds or a loft, they are down and in, and u can take those birds away to liberate to try and get them home and they will come back to u, and some of ur own are lost.
