crazy pigeon boy Posted March 3, 2007 Report Posted March 3, 2007 hi all i need some help! one of my race cocks has just been killed by a hawk the big problem is he is on young birds around 3-4 days old i have swaped the young birds under 2 different pairs one under each will the parents to these birds be able to rase 3 young birds and is there any thing i can do to help them please help
JADE Posted March 3, 2007 Report Posted March 3, 2007 The hen should rear the young birds on her own but I would make sure she had extra food - leave a pot of maple peas or tic beans in the nestbox. The other pairs should also manage to rear 3 ybs but again give plenty food.
Guest Posted March 3, 2007 Report Posted March 3, 2007 Wouldn't farm them out at this stage, because they are all on pigeon milk just now. Only supplies two youngsters, any more, then it comes off the other two.. Agree stick with the hen. Agree she'll need 'looking after'. She will be very reluctant to leave them even for a drink, never mind food, grit, or minerals. (1) Put a jar of water in the box, propped up (by a half-brick?) against the corner opposite one the nest bowl's in. (2) Feed the hen in the box, a full pot of whatever you feed the rest, in a gallipot; (3) Make up a min/grit mixture that you feed to the rest, in a gallipot in the box. That'll see you OK thro the next 10 days or so at least.
