Feed for breeding

Hi

 

i have kept mags for 2 years and i have not had much luck when breeding. Every year i have only managed to breed 5-6 youngsters and out of them i loose 4 in the first week of them hatching out. I have asked about and my mate said the food i am using might be too big for the squeakers and so is killing them. I am using a breeding mix that my local dealer sold me. It has got maize and peas in it but does state that it is a breeding mix. Last year i tried a small mix without peas and maize in it and the youngsters survived. Has anyone else had any trouble like this when the food is killing theire squeaks???

First off you have to get your breeders physically prepared. Lots of rich food, worm and vaccinate before you even pair for the season. Use a 4n1 after the first set of eggs is laid and before they hatch. This will give breeders a chance to get it metabolised before the eggs hatch.

 

I use wild bird seed when the chicks start coming. It contains smaller seeds the chicks can digest.I also use pellets in the mix to make sure they get all of the vites and minerals they need.

if your loosing them in the first week its liable [could be salmonella, paratyphoid ] this can be passed through the egg from carriers ,, pigeon milk should keep these ybs sustained no matter how youve fed them [for the first week ] then a high protein feed would be advised , with plenty grit and minerals,, even powdered baby milk powder in the water
