kev01293 Posted April 14, 2007 Report Posted April 14, 2007 hi,on 3/4/07 i asked for help after coming home after 5 days away working and found a 05 hen bird sick in her nestbox unable to stand, she had also lost weight and had swollen eyes, after giving her some water/glucose she seemed to perk up briefly but refused any corn,by the next morning she was dead,my wife is adamant that the hen took corn the day before i came back home so this being the case it was something that took hold and killed the hen within 24 hours? ive since been told that fresh straw was put into the loft 3 days before i came home but the straw was not from our usual supplier-could this have anything to do with my hens death bearing in mind that all my other pigeons seem ok so far? kev
Guest TAMMY_1 Posted April 14, 2007 Report Posted April 14, 2007 would doubt it as only one died, if something was in the straw it would almost certainly have affected more than one i would have thought anyway
tubbles Posted April 14, 2007 Report Posted April 14, 2007 Sorry to hear about the hen but try not to fall out with the missus over it. Could the problem be down to mice/rats? i believe that if a pigeon eats mice/rat droppings it can lead to salmonella or e-coli not sure which one. I have never had one with the symptoms that your hen had but if it is an isolated occurance. it could be that she ate some droppings or even a bit of poison that may have been in the straw or about the loft. I know you want to find out what it is but just hope that no more get problems.
