kev01293 Posted May 26, 2007 Report Posted May 26, 2007 hi all, 5 days ago a 05 red pied cock of mine went missing and i had more or less given it up as lost/dead as its never nighted out before but today max the cat (my wifes cat :-/ > ) spent all morning staring into the air vent on the chimney breast in our living room ? after some heated discussion with my other half i took the vent off but couldnt see anything inside but thought i heard a grunt sounding something like a pigeon so chisseled some bricks out hoping it was my missing red pied and not a starling/whatever? anyway after shining a torch in i saw my red pied and after showing it some corn/water, and a bit of grappling i managed to pull him out and even though he,s a bit thinner/dirtier he seems ok and is now back in the loft as if nothing happened but it makes you wonder how many pigeons fall down chimneys never to be seen again im now having my chimney capped off to prevent it happening again, has this happened to many other fanciers as well??
Dave A Posted May 26, 2007 Report Posted May 26, 2007 i have seen posts on here b4 about this. glad i dont have a chimney
Guest speckled Posted May 27, 2007 Report Posted May 27, 2007 glad to see ya got the birds out m8 Yep it does happen to use other fanciers :-/ but what i did was got some kind man, not scared of the roof tops to place wire mess over the chimmy along the first 4 houses in my close, just to on the safe side, thay where glad i did cause, ive retrived them from there houses lol mate maily for the y/bs cause thay do start roof hoping from time to time. never had to pull one out from chimmy again. Joe90 Posted May 27, 2007 Report Posted May 27, 2007 When the pigeon or any bird lands on a chimney pot with a gas fire that vents through the chimney will find this happens alot. the gas fumes from the fire make the bird dizy and he falls in. try and keep your birds off the house roof and get a cap or some wire mesh over the pot. just pulling the fire out the bird should drop down to the light after 30mins or so, normaly your chimney will have a ledge the bird will fall on abought a metre up. glad you got him out
peruzielofts Posted May 27, 2007 Report Posted May 27, 2007 lol i had three ybs last year go down my next doors chimny and each time had to take out his gas fire to get the birds out lol.like you say that could be where a lot of our missing birds could be lol.
