xtccock Posted August 15, 2007 Report Posted August 15, 2007 hi folks i strongly beleive that my birds as well as others are not getting at water on race days several reasons , what i want to know is about pumping them with water on a friday b4 they go can this be done and how help appreciated,
Back garden fancier Posted August 15, 2007 Report Posted August 15, 2007 Teach your birds to drink in the basket. People say "mine are basket trained", but have they spent several days in the basket feeding and drinking? No. Well they're NOT basket trained then. If you train them, you don't need to pump water into them. As well as basket training, I have my loft doors made up with wicker and hang drinkers on the outside just like the fed baskets. The birds don't like sticking their heads out between the bars, but this way they get used to it in the loft.
mickf Posted August 15, 2007 Report Posted August 15, 2007 best to use rehydration, put 20ml down there throats on a friday night, use a 20ml shringe with a plastic pipe attached
Wiley Posted August 15, 2007 Report Posted August 15, 2007 just remove your drinker for a while, then about hour before basketing put drinker back in, you'll notice on basketing they have taken a gd drink
little sam Posted August 15, 2007 Report Posted August 15, 2007 DO WHAT WILEY SAYS THEY ARE ALL JUMPING FOR THE WATER THEN
chichichi Posted August 15, 2007 Report Posted August 15, 2007 take drinker out at 12noon and give some hemp and rape seed 1 hour before basketing...put the drinker back in and they will drink well before going to the race....hope this helps.......my bed time now,,night all
THE FIFER Posted August 15, 2007 Report Posted August 15, 2007 if birds are getting an early lib, even although water is in front of them, birds dont drink early morning, unless after a feed, also we dont feed beans much now and beans are full of water,
xtccock Posted August 15, 2007 Author Report Posted August 15, 2007 well folks i leave for work at 7am and give them a feed nothing more till return from race i get home on fridays at 3.30pm on the last 8 races birds have been gagging for a drink on return and not trapping at all even to the point of wandering round the garden sucking grass
Wiley Posted August 15, 2007 Report Posted August 15, 2007 take the drinker out at 3.30 on the friday, then put drinker back in at 45 mins before basketing then. To me if it sounds like birds wont trap sounds like over feeding on the friday. This week will be worse aswell if birds get up as there will be plenty of water in ur guttering, and could mean valuable wasted seconds or even minutes
jimmy white Posted August 15, 2007 Report Posted August 15, 2007 hi folks i strongly beleive that my birds as well as others are not getting at water on race days several reasons , what i want to know is about pumping them with water on a friday b4 they go can this be done and how help appreciated, i think feeding yb in a dowelled feeder with a lid on top , then after feeding put galley pots of water in the feeder , this does train them to poke their heads through the dowels [same as baskets] for a drink ,,,but taking the drinkers away i wouldnt advise as they would retain their food in their crop till they had a drink ,,,if this was too close to basketing ,they would most probably bring it up and be worse off
Guest TAMMY_1 Posted August 16, 2007 Report Posted August 16, 2007 best to use rehydration, put 20ml down there throats on a friday night, use a 20ml shringe with a plastic pipe attached and how far down their throat would u push the pipe ?
swilcox Posted August 16, 2007 Report Posted August 16, 2007 I have treid forcing water on a friday but it upset them a little!
jakjak Posted August 16, 2007 Report Posted August 16, 2007 I like to see my pigeons take a drink when they return, it means they have put in the effort!! Even if they drink in the basket, they will want a drink when they return!! if they dont drink on return the bird aint made an effort! think about it, if you run for 30 minutes, the first thing you want is a drink, just my thoughts
swilcox Posted August 16, 2007 Report Posted August 16, 2007 I used to have a partner who would make pigeons wait 30 minutes before they could have a drink, it used to drive me wild.
Guest paulrstokes Posted August 16, 2007 Report Posted August 16, 2007 Handfull of redband and rice 45 mins befoire basketing, when they have ate that they go and drink.
mickf Posted August 16, 2007 Report Posted August 16, 2007 put the pipe down there throat till you reach the crop area.
Guest Posted August 17, 2007 Report Posted August 17, 2007 Seems to be a judgement call: drink when they eat, so if you don't feed them before they go, they won't drink. Forcing them to drink isn't best preparation for a race, doing what's suggested runs risk of injury, at best. If they don't drink when they come home from the race, then probably they've been down for a drink, and if they are as bad as described [delirious] then there is something more than not drinking wrong with them.
jimmy white Posted August 18, 2007 Report Posted August 18, 2007 ;D this may sound ridiculous ;D and probably is ;D, but i believe a lot of ybs dont take a drink in the transporter for one reason or another, especialy with holdovers etc and in the first few races , now i have to take a fair bit of medication [which is obvious by my posts ;D ;D ;D one of the medications i take, is a slow release capsule ,which ,instead of taking this medication in tablet form 4 times per day, i now can take one slow release capsule once a day [this is a capsule which releases my medication, inside my stomach ,at the right dose over a 24 hour period ,,now if this is possible in humans ,, i just wondered if the scientist, vets etc . could produce a capsules , that contained , just plain water that could be popped down the birds throat , so that once in the crop ,would release plain water in a slow release form ,in the birds crop over a 24 hr priod, ensuring the pigeon wouldnt deheydrate any, b4 lib ,,,,if they can do this in humans ,why not animals ??or birds ?? ok a bit mad ; :-/D but on the other hand, who knows ,,,docter j white, m.a.d ;D

Guest stevie-b Posted August 18, 2007 Report Posted August 18, 2007 use belgasol in the water on day of basketing and on race day your pigeons wont be dehydrated
jimmy white Posted August 18, 2007 Report Posted August 18, 2007 am i right in saying this is an electrolyte or reheydration salt ,minerals :) maybe would help , but remember we had a debate on electrlytes on the forum , some for, and some against ,,,,think i was a" for",,,after the race
Guest TAMMY_1 Posted August 19, 2007 Report Posted August 19, 2007 use belgasol in the water on day of basketing and on race day your pigeons wont be dehydrated Belgasol An unique combination of electrolytes, vitamins, trace elements and amino acids on an energy carrying base, developed for fast hydration to improve condition. Guest Posted August 19, 2007 Report Posted August 19, 2007 Well, on YBs not drinking in the basket: 7 late breds on their 3rd overnight stint in basket in the loft last night, food then water, didn't see one take water. Much the same experience with my other YB team, just can't get them to drink.
jimmy white Posted August 19, 2007 Report Posted August 19, 2007 if theve eaten in the basket ,bruno, and havent drunk for three days ,,try and handle each yb INSIDE the basket ,poking their heads through the basket ,they should drink then [if not, theve had a drink without you noticing it ] best of luck
