PIGEON_MAN Posted August 15, 2006 Report Posted August 15, 2006 ORIGINALLY THIS WAS THOUGHT OF AS A SHORT TO MIDDLE DISTANCE FAMILY OF BIRDS BUT IF YOU HAVE A CHAT WITH HYACINTH I THINK SHE WILL TELL YOU THAT SHE FLY,S THEM OUT TO 5 AND 600 MILES WITH SUCCESS.
Guest shadow Posted August 15, 2006 Report Posted August 15, 2006 I have flown them 70 to 500 miles with success
Guest Posted August 16, 2006 Report Posted August 16, 2006 Sharron, To be brief, there are 2 Staf van Reet Families. The Oreginal Van Reets are big heavy muscular birds good up to 300 miles. Dean Pallet went over to Staf and purchased most of his breeders and old bird team, leaving Staf with just his young birds. We all know how well Dean with them and his success made Staf famous therefore there was a big demand for his pigeons. So he had to bring in from the outside, Jos Sootjens for instance and thereby developed the 2nd family of Van Reets, which are more middle/longer distance than sprint. when Dean sold most of his stock our friend In Boston Mas. bough a great number and imported them to the USA. These are the pigeons we have in our loft and are doing so good for us at the shorter distances with the exception of The Ch.Leyton Express who is a very tiny pigeon, so is his son F8 Crusader and due to their size will fly the 500, I compare our Van Reets to track athletes, i.e. the big heavy muscular birds are equivilent to the 100 and 200 metre sprinters where the small wiry birds compare with the marathon runners. You can check our Van Reets out at http://www.redroselofts.com/vanreets.htm van Reets are very aggressive pigeons and need special handling when training. They are very intelligent and learn to locate very quickly, therefore we do not train our Van Reets with our other pigeons until a couple of weeks before the first race. We continually toss them from the same point day after day 35 miles in our case. After the first toss they don;t even circle, they come straight out of the basket and head for home. Hope this helps, if you need any more information, please PM me.
Guest Paulo Posted August 21, 2006 Report Posted August 21, 2006 Look like really nice birds Hyacinth nice pictures very professional
new2pigeons Posted August 23, 2006 Report Posted August 23, 2006 How come one strain of pigeon came to be so much better than all the rest?
Guest CS Posted August 23, 2006 Report Posted August 23, 2006 Nat, There is a lot of Strains.. all Strains got a lot of good pigeons...the pigeons will tell you if they are any good in the races.....
new2pigeons Posted August 23, 2006 Report Posted August 23, 2006 oh right thanks - I thought from what I've read today that van reets were some kind of super-pigeon and were the best so i wondered why anyone bothered racing anything else!?
Guest CS Posted August 23, 2006 Report Posted August 23, 2006 Nat, Yes Vanreets were some kind of super-pigeon for the spirints. There is a lot strains from Spirints, Middle Distance, Long Distance...
Guest CS Posted August 23, 2006 Report Posted August 23, 2006 i wondered why anyone bothered racing anything else!? There is a lot of fanciers likes to keep One family (Vanreets) or (Janssens) or (Busschaerts) etc or likes to mix the families...
new2pigeons Posted August 23, 2006 Report Posted August 23, 2006 I dont know what I want to do yet - I like the *idea* of racing but I dont think I have enough time or money to do it! I do like to see those aerial displays of the ones that fly in unusual ways!
Keepsmilingqueen Posted August 23, 2006 Author Report Posted August 23, 2006 i think i fit into the FLYER catagory lol, i love to race them but the most pleasure i find is just to watch them fly round the house, coo in the loft and come home safe at the end of the day, if i place its just a happy bonus ;D
new2pigeons Posted August 23, 2006 Report Posted August 23, 2006 Yeah its the same with my chickens - achieving something with them is an added bonus compared to just getting to spend time with them! Funny how some people get so much pleasure out of a bunch of birds!
antwerptom03 Posted September 4, 2006 Report Posted September 4, 2006 Alot of guys in our combine tried the Van Reets quite a few years back and did'nt have much success with them on our south course. The problem for us is the fact that our first YB race is nearly 200 miles. Perhaps thats the reason they did'nt do so well for us. The birds that seem to work on our race course are Janssen / Leen Boers type birds on the easy days and Hansenne and Sions on the tough days. I for one would like to try them in the next few years. However.. Our clubs switching from Unikon to Benzing M1's so i'll have to wait and contact Linda about some foundation birds in a few years. Tom
Guest Posted September 4, 2006 Report Posted September 4, 2006 Hi Tom, If you want to dispose of your Unikon when you;ve finished racing let me know please and what price, we have beginners in our club looking for one Thanks
antwerptom03 Posted September 4, 2006 Report Posted September 4, 2006 Hi Linda, I'ts already spoken for. Sorry! Tom
