I am very new to pigeons. I bought a pair of Bald headed Rollers, and a week or so later the hen layed an egg, but not in the next, so it broke, she layed next egg in the nest, but I never see her sitting on it. Should I just toss the egg? The guy I got them from said if they didn't work, I could trade them for a different pair, should I do that?

Not really the right time of year for breeding. Put your hand on the egg and check to see if it is warm just in case the hen or cock is jumping off the eggs when you come into the loft.

Personally I'd wait till next year and see how they get on then you don't want to be breeding pigeons at this time of year. Dark nights are coming in now along with the cold.

I checked the egg and its cold.So should I toss it?

I'll wait till next year, I'm 17 and raising pigeons is my FFA project. I love all animals and I thought I would try something new.

yep westy is right if its the first egg pigeons wont usually sit it unless its very keen there jus watch and stand over it,once the second egg is laid they will sit the egg and incubate both of them at the same time so they hatch generally at simular times

let them settle to the new loft, they should be ok then.

it's fine to breed at this time of year,i can't understand the above posts saying it's to cold.

just noticed your in Missouri so i'm not sure about the climate there.they do need time to get used to a new loft though.

sorry I said it was too cold I didn't see you were from the USA. I presumed you were from UK. Good looking with your breeding it should be fine where you are at with temps like that.

I wouldn't bother breeding any at this time of year ribble due to the shorter days closing in and the temp dropping. The youngs would prob be weak as many latebreds are this time of year and certainly not the peak condition racers I want. Thats just my opinion thro everybody has a different one thro thats the good thing about pigeon racing.

yes let them settle marybeth, hope all goes well.

paulo if i was to breed another round of latebreds, they would not be week in any way.i wouldn't of thought the weather in any part of the uk was to cold.

a lot of guys pair up late november early december and it's a lot colder then and the days are a lot shorter.

enjoy your birds.

i had the same probs with a pair of racers always smashed their first egg so waited till they laid the second egg then next day chucked a dummy egg in and they sat them and hatched it off
