Jim McArthur Posted November 26, 2006 Report Posted November 26, 2006 What types of pigeons are the easiest for a beginner to start with? Also, what books would you recommend to help a beginner learn about keeping pigeons? Jim
THE FIFER Posted November 26, 2006 Report Posted November 26, 2006 someone from over there on the site will give u some info.
Tim.Farr Posted November 26, 2006 Report Posted November 26, 2006 I have a book laying around called Pigeons by Matthew M. Vriends. Has some real basic good info on pigeons in general. If you're looking into racing pigeon books then Natural Love of Pigeon Racing by Lonnie Patterson is great, I've also heard Rotondo on Racing Pigeons is great. JEDDS found at www.jedds.com is a local pigeon supply store and also happens to be one of the largest in the states. A good place I think to find info is to go to www.ipigeon.com which is an auction site and go to member websites in the links section and just look through peoples websites. As far as the best pigeon for a beginner I personally would think racing(homing) pigeons are great. They're sturdy and once you have the babies settled you don't have to worry about losing them that easy off the loft. Although they're not the tamest out there with time they can be tamed with food.
jimmy white Posted November 27, 2006 Report Posted November 27, 2006 if you start with just a few racing pigeons, get them as babies and if you work well with them , they can be very tame indeed, theyll soon fly on , and feed on your hand etc ,,,best of luck ,,ps, youll find as much info on the forum to keep pigeons, plus any questions answered, theres quite a few newcommers on the forum :)
Jim McArthur Posted November 27, 2006 Author Report Posted November 27, 2006 Thanks, Mates! I love this list: just joined today, and am already learning a lot about these wonderful little critters! Jim

Guest Posted November 29, 2006 Report Posted November 29, 2006 Nowt, just a bit proud to belong to an organisation thst does so much to help new people coming into the Sport
birdman55678 Posted November 29, 2006 Report Posted November 29, 2006 Linda is also the head of the help a beginner program and has done a lot to improve and enhance our sport. I have known her for many years and have never heard her discourage a newbe in any way she has always bent over backwards to help and advise. It has been my privilege to support her. Ed
Guest Posted November 29, 2006 Report Posted November 29, 2006 Thanks for the kind words Ed. The Programme would not be what it is today with out my army of supporters, from people like yourself and Ms Pigeon (Carolfitzpatrick) who make themselves available as Mentors to the beginners, to the Managers of the one Loft Races, who kindly donate some very excellent stock once their race is over with, to the generous people who donate excellent stock throughout the year, toThe AU for providing such great publicity material and last but no no means least to Steve for taking the time and effort to build a very affordale starter loft then to publish a 32 page set of plans on our website so that beginners are not overwhelmed at the possibility of loft construction and cost. They say what goes around comes around, I am now getting beginners who were on the programme several years back coming to me now and asking what can they do to help our newbies, in fact I have just offered out to the beginners pigeons bred out of winning pairs bred by a lady who was Steve's beginner a couple of years ago and I will be sending out later today details of a very great donations from Richard Clarke Top Gun Loft NC, who would like to share some of his proven stock pairs . I can see many faults with the pigeon racing system in the States, the worse for me is that there is no transfer system for pigeons but at the end of the day The AU Help a Beginner Programme is miles ahead of the rest of the pigeon flying world. Thanks Carol and Ed for your continued support
birdman55678 Posted December 2, 2006 Report Posted December 2, 2006 Linda you will always have my support in that endeavor. It is my true belief that without programs like these our sport will be gone and forever lost to us. I wish everyone was on board. Later. Ed
Jim McArthur Posted December 3, 2006 Author Report Posted December 3, 2006 Linda, I got my AU material in yesterday's mail and started readng it last night. Jim
