Lance Posted December 20, 2006 Report Posted December 20, 2006 I have 4 New york domestic flights that just sit on my roof all day. How do I get them to fly and such? They're about a month and a half to 2 months old.
mO Posted December 20, 2006 Report Posted December 20, 2006 how high is the roof they sit on, can you make their feed lighter with barley or less feed, can you use a flag or tennis ball if practical? mO.
Lance Posted December 20, 2006 Author Report Posted December 20, 2006 how high is the roof they sit on, can you make their feed lighter with barley or less feed, can you use a flag or tennis ball if practical? mO. I've used a flag to get them off before, but htat makes them just land on the neighbours house, and the neighbours are bitchy about everything. I was thinking using some flax seeds for a lighter feed, but they tend to bum around all day. Even when they're hungry.
symbro Posted December 27, 2006 Report Posted December 27, 2006 well i dont know if this is still happening... but if you only let your birds out an hour before sun down... this will help a little. between that and keeping them hungry. as far as flying, just try waiting another month. eventually one will decide to fly... and the rest will follow.
Guest shadow Posted December 28, 2006 Report Posted December 28, 2006 If you have tried cutting down on thier food and they are still sitting out ignoring you get rid as they are to set in thier ways and will cause trouble with your neighbours and any other young ones you breed you train all pigeons through thier stomachs dont feed the until they obey you.
jimmy white Posted February 17, 2007 Report Posted February 17, 2007 keep them in for a few days , then let them out fairly hungry to begin with, call them in and feed them, get them used to a routine, dont let them hang about all day, theyll eventually want to fly , only let them out for short periods till their flying better
BLUESTORM Posted February 19, 2007 Report Posted February 19, 2007 Hi Good comments from everyone, Food is the biggest factor here, Keep them light on food, but you could try and get them use peanuts after they get the taste of peanuts, and they get use to the container, and you calling them they should DIVE in. Hope this has been some help. :)
Guest Posted February 19, 2007 Report Posted February 19, 2007 I think most beginners have this problem - I certainly did. The birds are probably too well fed and not used to being called down for their meal. Start in the shed by calling them down from the perch each & every time you feed them. Do not let them out immediately after you have fed them.
pigeonscout Posted February 20, 2007 Report Posted February 20, 2007 If you have sticky birds and want them to fly feed then 75% barley + 25% flax for 14 days, but they should be flying 2 to 3 hours in about 7 to 8 days. One other thing are you sure your birds are healthy?
kev01293 Posted February 23, 2007 Report Posted February 23, 2007 hi lance, yeh i had the same problem with my birds a while back when they wouldnt fly for long so i sent off a droppings sample and it turned out that they had a bacterial infection, the infection was easily treated via their drinking water. pigeon health diagnostic services are running tests for £12.50 at the mo and they check for all the usual nasties like canker, cocci and worms as well as other types of infection (see todays racing pigeon mag for their ad) their tel no is 01206 842221 in case u need it,good luck kev
velo99 Posted February 23, 2007 Report Posted February 23, 2007 Sounds like too much feed. Cut em back to half for two days. Leave them in the first day. Second day, put em in a box and take em a block away, then release them. They have developed a bad habit, are fat and lazy. You might not ever get them to perform properly again. If this is the case, breed from them and try using proper methods on the babies. good luck v99
