stevebelbin Posted March 22, 2007 Report Posted March 22, 2007 JUST TO LET U KNOW ALL MINE HAS LAID NOW The hen that wouldnt lay for me - still hasnt!!!
Guest Posted March 23, 2007 Report Posted March 23, 2007 I had a hen who took ages to lay,she just was'nt settled enough, once she relaxed she laid and raised 2 great squeekers and is now down again on eggs no problem.Sometimes you have to look at it from their point of view, she was a new hen in a strange new loft full of strange new pigeons, hardly likely to feel like settling down. You have to just be patient. Also if I am ever in doubt about the parents rearing capabilities I use tried and tested feeders instead.I learnt this lesson the hard way last year when I ended up holding the baby! After 2 days the parents [who I had always been a bit worried about as they were never 100% interested in the egg] decided the novilty had worn off and it was too much like hard work so just blanked the 2 day old completely.I raised him and still have him,he is now a very bolshy yearling. Not something i would relish doing again, mega hard work, but I could never have just disposed of him.Be careful
Guest Posted March 24, 2007 Report Posted March 24, 2007 Some of my friends who have fancy pigeons use racing pigeons to raise all the fancy youngsters. You need to speak to an expert in your breed and your particular strain,if you are already having doubts about them you need to have a serious think/plan of action in place.I always keep a syringe[well bored out to make the hole wider],some porridge oats and a small bag of baby parrot food in ready incase of emergencies.
Guest Posted March 24, 2007 Report Posted March 24, 2007 whats the parrot food for to learn them to talk not use pigeon feeding like every one else
THE FIFER Posted March 24, 2007 Report Posted March 24, 2007 indian fantails are not good feeders, better putting eggs with something else.
Guest Posted March 25, 2007 Report Posted March 25, 2007 Baby parrot food is basically egg food and mixed 1 part egg food to 2 parts porridge is an ideal rearing mix fed down the syringe luke warm about every 3 hours, don't need to feed through the night. My top tip for hand rearing is put a mirror in the baby's cage from day 1 or else you will end up with it thinking it is a human [seriously] oh and it will need a hot water bottle with a cover on until it is at least 10 days old.Bet you all think i am completely nuts now,but it works if you can be bothered to do it all

Guest Posted March 25, 2007 Report Posted March 25, 2007 Yeah Tammy satisfying and rewarding when you see them grow. The funny thing about the cock I raised from 2 days is that even now as a yearling when i go in and clean out every day as soon as he sees me he starts raiding the hopper even though that hopper is full 24/7,he just associates me with stuffing his face.Anyone who tells you they grow into weaklings is wrong....he has the top perch and he dominates the floor, and guess what?,he gets away with it because he knows he has me wrapped around his little claw, weakling no,spoilt totally
