lordcornwallis Posted March 27, 2007 Report Posted March 27, 2007 hi whats the best time of day to wean young birds ,morning or evening? also should you put a box in with them?
THE FIFER Posted March 27, 2007 Report Posted March 27, 2007 usually make sure they have food in them before taking them away from the nest,
Guest Posted March 27, 2007 Report Posted March 27, 2007 Agree. They've been fed and have all day to get used to their new surroundings. I used to put my basket in YB section, flap down, for them, for the first few days, but nowadays nothing as I want them off the floor asap.
sapper756 Posted March 27, 2007 Report Posted March 27, 2007 YES ALWAYS AFTER THE MORNING FEED ALSO MEANT TO ADD, THAT I ALWAYS HAVE A COUPLE OF OLD SPARE HENS IN WITH THE YOUNGSTERS. THEY SEE THESE OLD HENS DRINK AND EAT, AND THEY KNOW WHERE THE FEED AND DRINK IS.
Chatrace Posted March 28, 2007 Report Posted March 28, 2007 I like to do it after dark and let them wake up to new section where they find the water and feed
Guest Posted March 29, 2007 Report Posted March 29, 2007 I always do it after they have had a good breakfast from their parents and I put a box in for them to snuggle in,I also like to dip their beaks in the water twice a day for 2 or 3 days and i hope they learn to feed off the older squeekers or perhaps put a gentle old trusted hen with them.I think time spent with them at this age is well spent so they become tame and i never wean till i am sure they are ready, they are all individuals,so what if one is 20 days and another is 24 days
jimmy white Posted March 30, 2007 Report Posted March 30, 2007 i would prefer to wean them of an evening , with a full crop,, in to a section with shavings on the floor , where they can huddle together, during the night then in the morning find they venture out , and pick at some maples, drinker in with the top off [usually bath in it then change it
Guest Paulo Posted March 30, 2007 Report Posted March 30, 2007 after morning feed so they have a full crop
Keepsmilingqueen Posted April 6, 2007 Report Posted April 6, 2007 i usually take them off on a morning after the parents have been exercised and fed, so the young have a little feed in the crop but arnt stuffed (but i do always have a pot of maples peas in a corner of the nesting box so by then they are eating by them selves anyway) in the youngbird section i have 2 ancient tumblers with hearts of gold who will feed anything if it squeaks and chases them enough which is handy, plus thease old timers show the youngones were to eat and drink. i also put a large ish upturned cardboard box with an entry hole cut in on with floor in a corner with straw inside for them to rest in until they can get up onto perches but its usually only required for a night or 2. ps anyone else that uses tumbler/droppers for there youngbirds have u noticed that young pigeons are racist !! when i put the 1st lot of weaners in each year they bully the life out of the tumblers and chase them non stop (they arnt doing the food begging kind of chase this is nasty chase with pecking) iv concluded it must be becouse they are frigtened of the tumblers having never seen anything with feathered feet before and maybe arnt quite sure what they are ;D
madmaxlofts Posted April 6, 2007 Report Posted April 6, 2007 i usualy do it after tea lets them settle after been pumped then i still let the hens in the young bird side for a couple ov days for an hour or so just to give them a bit extra and to teach them were the water is
