Snapper Posted May 7, 2007 Report Posted May 7, 2007 I've just pulled 2 magpies off one of my baby Garden Fantails. It had just left the Dovecote and is not flying well yet. The bird is bloodied but I think it should live. The magpies killed another youngster last week in the same way. Any ideas on how to discourage the magpies - apart from shooting them?

shotgun tim Posted May 7, 2007 Report Posted May 7, 2007 get a call bird from a local gamekeeper or you can put food in eggs put into a nest is good, or cat food or some sort of meat
Snapper Posted May 7, 2007 Author Report Posted May 7, 2007 Thanks everyone for the advice. The attacked youngster seems to have recovered a bit and is feeding. Will def get a Larsen Trap - loads of Magpies round here!

Back garden fancier Posted August 15, 2007 Report Posted August 15, 2007 I used a Larsen trap and got over 60 magpies in the first year. If you can't get a magpie to get you started, build a false birds nest in the trap and put some eggs in it ( any will do, or make some from plasticine!) One thing to remenber though, is that magpies and crows keep sparrowhawks away, which can be worse! Good luck.
