beyers zoontjen base mix

If its the mix I'm thinking of the base mix is referred to as 'blue', the lighter mix is referred to as 'yellow'. I found both had very good quality grains. The 'blue' has a very high % of maize and hardly any small grains or seeds in at all. On its own I found it too beefed up, I'd suggest you buy the lighter yellow as well along with a depurative mix and mix accordingly.

Zoontjens Food

Feeding the pigeons is a chapter at its own at Zoontjens residence. The feeding system and the mixtures of both father Jan and son Wal Zoontjens became famous all over the world. The food firm Beyers produces two Zoontjens mixtures, also known as ‘Zoontjens Yellow’ and ‘Zoontjens Blue’. Wal always keeps closely in touch with Beyers to keep improving the nutritional value of the mixtures.

They are a light digestible mixture (Yellow) – consisting of wheat, white dary, cardi, vetches, lentils, sorgho, katjang idjoe, paddy and buckwheat – and a heavier mixture (Blue) consisting of maize, pies and soy. Father Jan is the founder of these mixtures.

Wal feeds his widowers as follows: every morning and evening all widowers get a hand full of the light mixture. Depending what race comes up, in short distance the cockbirds get the heavier mixture one or two nights. In middle distance racing that is two or three nights. In one day long distance racing three or four nights. The quantity of this heavier mixture also depends on the race. Wal makes sure they still have a healthy appetite the last day before basketing and sometimes in the morning some more heavier mixture and less light mixture is given to keep them eating until the moment they are basketed. For a one day long distance race they must have half or three quarters of their crop full with food. A hand full of Super Energy from Beyers is given for some extra replenishment.

The last two nights the one day long distance cocks get 5 grams of an own made mixture consisting of paddy (50%) – tovo (20%) – bantam seed (used by fishermen, 7%) – candy seed (7%) and P40 (7%).

Often this feeding mixture is criticized as being too heavy. However the many years of top results have proven the feeding system to be just. Only very seldom the pigeons return home fatigue and many times they still have energy left to make an extra victory round after a heavy one day long distance race.

After weaning, the youngsters get the breeding mixture for some weeks and afterwards a mixture of 1/3 Breeding, 1/3 Zoontjens Yellow and 1/3 Barley. On races above 300 km the barley is left out the last days.
