Guest Posted August 12, 2007 Report Posted August 12, 2007 Hi Everyone Does anyone have any simple plans for a good loft suitable for a novice just starting out? I have searched the web but nothing suitable as they were aimed at an American and I wan't familiar with the tools and types if timber used (I'm not great at DIY but would be willing to learn if I had to). I am interested in a design that would be easy to keep clean while offering the best home for my birds. I would just be keeping them as a way to get to know pigeons and decide what I would like to do next once I have learnt some of the basics first hand. Also, how many birds would you suggest a novice should begin with? I'm 39 years old and keen to learn while doing the right thing by any pigeions I own in the future, Finally, while I have your attention I would be delighted if you could offer me any persoanl tips for a novice - little nuggets of wisdom you have picked up that I might not find in the books I may read. Many thanks for your time.
Guest TAMMY_1 Posted August 12, 2007 Report Posted August 12, 2007 Ask Dovescot, he is in the process of building one just now

Many thanks for your time. What your better doing is finding out who is your local pigeon fancier and go see his set up and ask him about any others in your area that way you will get as many ideas as possible on loft design time is of the essence so make your stay short ;D ;D ;D
Guest Posted August 12, 2007 Report Posted August 12, 2007 time is of the essence so make your stay short ;D ;D ;D Thanks for the rply. Please forgive me - I'm probably being pretty thick here but why is time of the essence?
The White Rapido Man Posted August 14, 2007 Report Posted August 14, 2007 Why not try the local library? Whe I first started with pigeons amny moons ago, there was a very basic book...Pigeons for beginners...I cant remeebr who wrote it. It had loft designes and basically everything you neeed to know to get you going. Good look........................and welcome to the fancy!!!
Guest TAMMY_1 Posted August 14, 2007 Report Posted August 14, 2007 Thanks for the rply. Please forgive me - I'm probably being pretty thick here but why is time of the essence? Its not you thats thick it's him, ignore him he's an idiot.
DOVEScot Posted August 14, 2007 Report Posted August 14, 2007 Ask Dovescot, he is in the process of building one just now Mines is for Chickadees fancy pigeons not racers, but would be happy to help, and would get on better if Tammy stopped winding her up ;D ;D ;D
Guest Posted August 14, 2007 Report Posted August 14, 2007 Mines is for Chickadees fancy pigeons not racers, but would be happy to help, and would get on better if Tammy stopped winding her up ;D ;D ;D Thanks to evryone for suggestions. I already have the only pigeon book my local library has (I may venture into the city to the main branch, my wife will no doubt enjoy a trip into town for some shoe shopping :). The design of my loft would be suitable for any type of pigeon - I am interested in tumblers right now, I think I will have to gain some knowldege before trying my hand at racing. Any more suggestions keep them comming. Cheers!
The White Rapido Man Posted August 14, 2007 Report Posted August 14, 2007 if you just want to keep a few tumblers for now, then you dont need anything too fancy.... If it was me I would convert a 6 x 8 garden shed, to the side you could make a flight with v-perches in...internally you could have a range of box / nest perches, and v-perches.......and just let nature take its course. I would line the shed internally with marine ply so that it would be warmer in the winter...an if you want you could put a light in teh main loft for theose darker afternoons A shed of this size with flight could easily accomodate 6 - 7 pairs
