cokacola Posted December 10, 2007 Report Posted December 10, 2007 As some of you may know I'm new to the sport and have so-far been to 1 club meeting. I'm going to start with young birds next year. At the club, they recommended a minimum of 30 young birds if you want a chance at some success. On the internet, the rule seems to be as many as you can manage. Being 16 years old and working from the back of the garage, it's going to be hard to house 30 birds, I was planning on having a young bird team of about 15 to start off with. what are peoples thoughts and out of interest, how many young birds will you be breeding? Regards Tariq.
Guest Posted December 10, 2007 Report Posted December 10, 2007 If you feel comfortable with 15 YBs, then that's the number to go for. Remember that overall numbers are likely to increase year-on-year through breeding. Haven't finalised my breeding pairs yet, but expecting around the same number.
EAGLEOWL Posted December 10, 2007 Report Posted December 10, 2007 hello tariq breed only what you can look after without it becoming a chore ,i only breed twenty young birds a season ,dont overcrowd your loft ,keep them happy and healthy and enjoy your pigeons mate , good luck for 2008
Guest REDFOXKRAUTHS Posted December 10, 2007 Report Posted December 10, 2007 i had 15 youngster in 2006 and that was my bes season since 2004

matt Posted December 10, 2007 Report Posted December 10, 2007 i think the less birds you have the healthier they will be and will probably do better your only prob with few birds is if you suffer early losses a close friend of mine did last year he only had 6 birds left but he still scored every young bird race bar 1, the rest were lost on the first race he got 1 back 3rd race that was out of 30 ybs 7 crackers he was left with good birds come through you dont have to be a mob flyer
cokacola Posted December 10, 2007 Author Report Posted December 10, 2007 Yes I could comfortably house about 15 at present. I could always extend Paul as that partitioned bit where the bantams are, could be brought out further into the garage, but if I could just race 15 for my first season that would be fine. I'm going to put a sputnik on the outside of the garage infront of the small glass window. I was worried that racing with 15 young birds weekly in the young bird season may mean I have little success and not many birds at the end of the season, but its nice to know others only have small young bird teams too. Tariq.

It went ok, there's a bit of an age difference between me and the rest of the club but ah well, they seem nice guys. 1, who wins the federation every year is going to ring me 6 young birds too! So I'l have those in addition to any my 3 stock pairs breed.

Tariq. Do not worry about sending 15 every week if your club goes to a race point more than once you could send half your team one week and half the next
whiteflight Posted December 10, 2007 Report Posted December 10, 2007 Its not about how many y/bs or even old birds you have its the QUALITY you have at the end of the day, but thats just my opinion

Tariq. hi tariq, concentrate on knowledge of pigeon racing b4 thinking of any success, that will come in a few years of knowing ur birds, learn the ropes 1st and ur see as the old saying goes learn to walk b4 u can run! is the best advice i can give u. them old uns in ur club have valuble knowledge and u must try to copy/learn wot the most successful flyer in ur club does!..because he,s the one ur gonna have to beat to win . scoring in the federation should be out of ur mind and just concentrate on getting ur pigeons fit and able to home as fast as possible. spend a lot of time knowing ur birds and get them to know u. hope this helps a little....paul.
ACE LOFTS Posted December 10, 2007 Report Posted December 10, 2007 couldnt agree more white flight, but as he is only starting i would only manage what u can the loft can handdle
Guest Paulo Posted December 11, 2007 Report Posted December 11, 2007 15 to 20 but train them like machines plenty of it that what makes good yb's
Okitsme Posted December 11, 2007 Report Posted December 11, 2007 Hi Tariq, I am very new too, I only started this year in May. I managed to fly a few young bird races. I have a 7' x 4' young bird section which I am hoping to get 16 young birds in for next year. I will be happy to race these few as the guys have said, you need to learn first. I dont intend to win any races anytime soon (and I probably wont either ;D) but I sure am going to give it a try. I only have a small setup so fewer pigeons for me as that means you have more control and healthier pigeons. ;D
cokacola Posted December 11, 2007 Author Report Posted December 11, 2007 Kwl. Thanks for all your replies guys
