i got my very first pair of pigeons on friday and would like to know how long it takes for them to pair up? i set up a nest box with a nest bowl before i put them in my loft, they have been in there for 5 days and theres not much going on.

is it best to lock them in the nest box together or let them free fly around the loft. so far they have been flying freely inside the loft.

Assuming they are not late 07 breds and are sexually matured, I would pen them in the box toether...

Turn the next pan upside down so the hen can get away from the driving cock if he's 'at her'.............

once paired...up turn the bowl..put a nest felt init..and  starw in the box..they will love it!!

Add a drop wheatgerm oil to the seed.....(this will up the sex drive).

You should know if they are paired as they will be sat next to each other..and will bill and kliss eack other..............check on them at night...as if they are paired..they will be snugglled up together.

If the cock and han had been split before you got them...they should be bang at it straight away......usually once paired....they will lay withing 8 - 12 day.

1 egg first...usually at arounf 4-5 oclock......the second usually its laid the next night.

The cock will sit tight in the bowl and coo his back wheels off at the hen...who if she's rank......will be displaying back him :)

good luck

Hi Lawrie,

How old  are the birds? if they're latebred youngsters they might still be sexually imature. With all birds old or young they will take a while to get used to a new loft, once they're happy enough they'll most probably take to one another (providing you haven't two cocks or two hens!)

Are you feeding a good quality mix? Try feeding them a little hemp and adding B12 to the water. The days are very short now, not to mention cold, have you any lights in the loft, you could try extending the birds daylight hours (thats if you haven't already done that).

I think the main issue here is that the birds are in a new environment and that it's just a matter of them settling. If you just have the two birds in the section together I wouldn't lock them in together, not yet anyway.

Good luck, I'm sure you will get more advice on here.

thanks for the replys!

the hen is an 07 and the cock is an 04. is the hen not mature enough? i have extended their daylight hours and added wheat germ to their feed. the cock is interested but the hen doesnt look too sure of him. im 100% positive that its a cock and hen. ive never saw them tredding, would this normaly happen on the first day?

the hen is a latebred give her time she will pair to him remember they were in the loft with about 20 birds some old hen's and he was the only cock.

If she is nodding back at the cock it is a very good sign, a pinch of hemp each for them will help things along, other than that its just a matter of time.

You are new to it, I remember what I was like, all excited like an expectant father  ;D ;D
