UConnTom Posted December 26, 2007 Report Posted December 26, 2007 Hey Guys: Unfortunately I have a hen who got hit by a hawk today and I found her quite beat up in front of my garbage can outside. She has a slice in her and its bleeding. What should I do?
Guest Thunder Birds Posted December 26, 2007 Report Posted December 26, 2007 It's amazing how resilient these little birds are. We've them hit by hawks, wires etc and had great gaping holes in them. Injuries that would have killed a person outright! So long as her main organs haven't been damaged she should be able to recover fine. A needle and thread some good disinfectant (TCP or Dettol) and a non queezy stomach should do the trick

Guest Posted December 26, 2007 Report Posted December 26, 2007 agree as at (a),the old needle n thread works ,any type of antiseptic ,had 1,come home ripped rite thro the crop ,as was drinking water it was pouring out - remedy - soak peas in water ,so they don't pass out thro crop, enabling bird to retain food n liquid ,,if hole to large try peanuts .....hope the tip helped ..gud luk ...
Guest Posted December 26, 2007 Report Posted December 26, 2007 Had a few hit by a hawk and survive, but my latest casualty didn't, found her dead in her box on morning before Christmas. Wasn't cut or anything, but she had taken a pounding from the crows that had tried to finish her off. She could only keep small stuff down, I continually went back to barley and pellets, then tried a few days later to build up gradually with odd bits of maize, milo dari etc., and gave her lukewarm water to drink on cold mornings. Saw her polish that off on Sunday, but Monday morning she had brought it up again, and was lying as if she just keeled over in the night. Maybe heart failure, strain of one vomit too many? Hard to know extent of bird's injuries that you can't see. :-/

What should I do? hi tom ,, if you look back the posts youll see my birds pics of being attacked and hitting window ,, after a hawk attack,, its amazing how these birds heal ,, this bird was so bad , the gamekeeper was going to put it down , but tended to the bird puffing an antibiotic powderon the wound ,, fully expecting the worst the next day ,mostly due to shock ,he reckoned if it survived the first night it would be ok,,, glad to report the bird is back to his old self , flying perfectly ,cooing etc,, but it does make you wonder what phsycological damage it may have done
