similar to hogni i write on paper note book, dated and timed for routine, feeding and measurments, cleaning, i'm also going to weigh my birds through the race season, then i put all that data onto PLO where i can print out pairing sheets, race results and bird data

All the above are reasonable things to do but iam afraid their is no substitute for experience the best thing you can do is befriend a good fancier and learn from him (if you can find one who is willing to teach you your apprenticeship) if not listen to good fanciers talking and try and pick out the good bits if your not sure dont be afraid to ask but it will all take a long time and many mistakes along the way

I think anyone that has a computer is best to keep their records and copies of them, on it, tho my record keeping does start with an A5 size card [old months pages from my calendar] pinned to each nest box on which I note pair's ring numbers, dates paired, laid, hatched, then YB ring number, and ticks to show 'seen eating', 'seen drinking'. When the hen is sitting pot eggs, I can calculate her monthly cycle from it, stops eggy hens ending up in the race basket.

I also use Word to keep daily notes on computer, a couple of lines on weather, feed and anything of note.

My loft management software is 'Loftbase'. Its pretty limited its main drawback is it doesn't have a 'bird not in loft' facility, like Eastcoast, so you cannot delete or archive a record of a bird that's no longer in the stock loft for example, without taking out the breeding records of the odd bird that might still be in the loft, albeit donkey's generations away from it. So I cannot get a true 'bird list' and I only use it for my breeding records - pedigree and other reports are there, but they are of little help [to me].

I use Excel to count the days till hatch, and / or nest condition for a future race, to see who'll be sitting what when, or for specific races who'll need eggs taken away and when etc.

Does anyone have or know where to find the excel sheet for calculating days from pairing till hatching and so on?

I remember seeing it somewhere on the internet but can´t seem to find it now

I use the PLO system, seems ok. I think it means more work, as you can take a picture of each bird and put it in it's file. Also you have a lot of race deatils to enter in order to build up "bird profiles" But if you like computers and pigeons then PLO is a good system.

i suppose nowadays theres much new technoligy in the management ,of pigeons, via cumputers etc, ,,,,but looking back on some of my  old loft books of the late 50,s really did make me smile [and brought back great memories ,, of when pigeons werent just ring nos. :)    even nowadays a book like this would be hard to beat ,,every training toss was on it ,,each one with an individual remark [some you couldnt print ;D]........... times of each bird if singled up ,, i,e wee heed 2 23[due to hatch frid ] the big pied 2 32 usless  ;Dthe red cock usless ,,,,fancied that too,[wont give up on him yet] flapping about like he ruled the skies, all 8 back in 30 mins ,,,,,,,,,,,then there were daily notes,, like j wilsons cocks nestmate lost ,,,,,next day john wisons cocks nestmate come back , next day ,,put linolium on floor of loft  ;D  really funny to look at it [but every single detail was in that book  ] every race wind lib estimated times estimated positions [usually i was wrong ;D] but the page written in red and big print ,,,penrith race lib9 am  s e wind won race with wee pied all pools £7, 7s, 6pence  ;D ;D ;D still have some of these books and beleive it or not , they are a mind of information,,,,,,,,,,differant today :(

When one talks about old books etc, I've just recently been fortunate enough  to be able read in full, the "Book on Pigeons" by Robert Fulton (nearly 400 pages). What an extroadinary piece of dedication on his behalf, to our sport by the author. When one considers when it was first published etc, a true masterpiece in every sense of the word in my view, even today.

PS, It cost me !!!!!, a good deed & 3 bags of pigeon sh**  :D :D :D

Enjoy.
