p charlton Posted January 26, 2008 Report Posted January 26, 2008 when istoped racing in 2003 the was 6 clubs in a 5 mile rance with a member ship of 15 members to 30 now the is some that have just 3 to 5 members the must be something that can be done
carlsberg Posted January 26, 2008 Report Posted January 26, 2008 if 6 clubs in a 5 mile radius best idea would be to just make 1 club ,but even that wouldn't work because each club would have a top flyer that wouldn't want to compete against other top flyers , so most clubs are selective on who they let join
Hogni Posted January 26, 2008 Report Posted January 26, 2008 I recommend the videos by Jim Jenner (Paccom Films) and just work out a plan to start promoting the sport to young people. Take a look at the Paccom films website http://www.paccomfilms.com/ For an example fanciers could take these videos to schools and show them to kids and bring along a few birds. Share The Blue Sky Oldest Feathered Friend Marathon in the Sky
jimmy white Posted January 26, 2008 Report Posted January 26, 2008 first of all,, clubs not refusing young members,,,,,ive allways said if each fancier got one person interested in pigeons ,,,,think about it
Guest Silverwings Posted January 26, 2008 Report Posted January 26, 2008 feel that the image of the sport is ' ITS AN OLD MANS GAME ' got to find a way to re vamp it ! make it more interestin to the kids ? find a way to make them take a second look and thats a tall order with them atatched to computer games by their umbilical ?
Guest Vic Posted January 26, 2008 Report Posted January 26, 2008 There is no way that modern kids, will enter our game. Or am i just another disillusioned Grrrrr...andad.
carlsberg Posted January 26, 2008 Report Posted January 26, 2008 agree with you silverwings nowadays it is more of an old mans game but i'm trying to get my kids involved by letting them each choose a youngbird and seeing which does best, last season my eldest daughter chose the best one she's 8 my other daughter 5 picked what i believe will be the best yearling hen while my son 7 chose one that carded one week and was gone the next my wife also chose one it was 3rd club one week lost following week but still got nestmate which carded twice i believe that if you try and make it a family thing that you will have members for the future , PS i wasn't allowed outside on a race day till i was about 7 but was still allowed in loft b4 that
chubs Posted January 26, 2008 Report Posted January 26, 2008 I'm not exactly young but young ish (26) Out of maybe the 50 people who know i'm interested in pigeons 2 think it's very interesting the rest think i'm completely mad. 'jack duckworth' i get at least weekly! (doesn't help i own whippets too mind! There are very very few people interested in any type of country sport anymore, i personally am involved in a few but young blood in any of these is very thin, the fact is the old ways are going for good, it's just the way it is. I bet a lot of eskimo's/inuits can't build an iglo anymore! Look at the way we're discussing this? over the internet..... all that said i'm trying to start a young lad off with rollers at the minute, building a little kit box. To inspire young people with the totally amazing feats these little feathered warriors achieve is the way, get kids & grandkids out releasing birds & seeing them trap back in, my little lad loves 'his' roller, always wanting to fly it & thought of having racers is got him really going.
jimmy white Posted January 26, 2008 Report Posted January 26, 2008 its quite amazing really ,,if seeds are planted about pigeons in youngsters ,some do take to them [get the bug ],,maybe for a short time,, ,,,,then the hormones take over,, but after that , they usually want to keep them again ,, as silverwings says ,,,some way of re-vamping the pigeon fancy is really needed ,
carlsberg Posted January 26, 2008 Report Posted January 26, 2008 you dont have to be old to enjoy what you enjoy doing as for the jack duckworth comment sod anybody that belittles what you enjoy doing if you enjoy it get on with it
chubs Posted January 26, 2008 Report Posted January 26, 2008 you dont have to be old to enjoy what you enjoy doing as for the jack duckworth comment sod anybody that belittles what you enjoy doing if you enjoy it get on with it I've always quite liked jack duckworth ;D
leighton1984 Posted January 26, 2008 Report Posted January 26, 2008 Hi all am 23 all my freands tell me whats with racing pigeons . But when you can get your birds to come and fly to you and they see this they do like this i know alot of this is the the feeding but the joy of seeing your birds come on a race day is the best thing ever if more kids can go to lofts and see what the sport has to offer they will spend less time on the streets .
carlsberg Posted January 26, 2008 Report Posted January 26, 2008 hello rose thats why i'm trying to get my children involved i got everything to make them want to get into racing pigeons but one thing i cant give them is the passion that is the only thing they need to get for themselves
Guest karl adams Posted January 27, 2008 Report Posted January 27, 2008 do kids in belgium take to pigeons if so may be we should look at how they get involed
THE FIFER Posted January 27, 2008 Report Posted January 27, 2008 my g/son has been interested in my birds since he could walk, hje is now 12 still goes to blackpool and knows all the birds but not the same interest, he plays football now in a lokal learning club, which is good for them its all governed by the SFA etc, must have proper refs, which have to be paid for etc, i got landed as chairman of their club.
Guest Silverwings Posted January 27, 2008 Report Posted January 27, 2008 following that last T.V output on the sun city million dollar race i was inundated with questions from neighbours, workmates etc wanting a peice of the action ? after explaining the ins, outs, and cost their enthusiasm quickly faded ,but on the same token the thing that turned their heads was the 1.ooo.ooo us dollars perhaps this could be the carrot to dangle ? maybe outside interest on a less expensive /collective basis part ownership type alternative could be offered ......another way of sowing the seed and not just to the kids........ray

carlsberg Posted January 27, 2008 Report Posted January 27, 2008 i actually love jack duckworths character but it plays no part in the actual racing of pigeon's that in the number of years i actually watched it he never rang any youngbirds or never raced any pigeons
carlsberg Posted January 27, 2008 Report Posted January 27, 2008 rose its like you say kids will go where there mates are but it is up to us to try and bring some back and try to teach them about what is really important that is why'm trying to get my kids birds back on track
carlsberg Posted January 27, 2008 Report Posted January 27, 2008 probably try a one loft race kids can choose name and such like everyone happy
Guest TAMMY_1 Posted January 27, 2008 Report Posted January 27, 2008 following that last T.V output on the sun city million dollar race i was inundated with questions from neighbours, workmates etc wanting a peice of the action ? after explaining the ins, outs, and cost their enthusiasm quickly faded ,but on the same token the thing that turned their heads was the 1.ooo.ooo us dollars perhaps this could be the carrot to dangle ? maybe outside interest on a less expensive /collective basis part ownership type alternative could be offered ......another way of sowing the seed and not just to the kids........ray the cost of starting from scratch will put a lot of people off whether they are young or old , plus the spiralling costs of food and suchlike does not really help either, it really is a declining sport in a lot of areas
Guest spin cycle Posted January 27, 2008 Report Posted January 27, 2008 agree with tammy cost is huge factor . try telling any parent their young racer will need 3o pairs of racers and raise 50 ybs and guess the awnswer. i know this is not ioo% true but it's not that far off. i think we should pitch at people who are just giving up athletic sport and looking for another interest. i think this game is abit like owning a football club [recruit players ,get them fit, motivate and send a team out each week hoping to score]. perhaps it could be pitched as such. we also keep to many pigeons and to tackle this we need to stop worshipping mob and money.
Merlin Posted January 27, 2008 Report Posted January 27, 2008 Again I think that there are number of reasons why our sport is fading, its origin began in an era when monies and the benifits that kids enjoy to day was non existent,in my day keeping pigeons was equivilant to all the oppertunities youngsters have to day,too many to mention,to entice new people in the sport wold have to be packaged and sold to these kids, and also to older people, who now have more recreation time than ever in their history, this would have to be done at the top,a top class p/r system through the medium of T.V and the daily tabloids, highlighting the positives of the game,on a continuing basis at National level, especially through the schooling system, the basics are always there re youth and pets, encourage it,and harness it to pigeons, can this be done, not forgetting the image of our sport is some what akin to an underground sport everywhere except among ourselves,we know this isnt so,but we are preaching to those already converted, better if we display and sell to newbies,we would have to clean our own house up quite a bit,are we able,if not what the eventual outcome will be. ? well
