Peckedhen Posted February 18, 2008 Report Posted February 18, 2008 A yearling hen laid yesterday but, when I went in the loft this morning, she wasn't with the egg. I know that she won't sit tight till she lays the second but, last night was -5!! Will the egg have frozen? Do you think it will still be viable? I've replaced it with a pot egg temporarily till she lays again, but I'm wondering if its too late for this one? :-/
Tony C Posted February 18, 2008 Report Posted February 18, 2008 If the drinker in that section was frozen this morning its a very good chance that the egg (if it hasn't been covered by the hen) has frozen to. Sometimes a hen will stand over the egg, if she did this she might have done just enough to stop the cold penetrating into it, I guess only time will tell.
pjc Posted February 18, 2008 Report Posted February 18, 2008 Tonys right, she may not be sitting tight but covering the bowl will have protected it. I have seen eggs totaly frozen where the ice has expanded and split the shell! You will know in a few days if the eggs are fertile and the embryo is developing normaly. Phil
Peckedhen Posted February 18, 2008 Author Report Posted February 18, 2008 We were expecting it to freeze last night so I removed the drinkers; I don't know if they would have frozen. As you say, only time will tell.
crazy pigeon boy Posted February 18, 2008 Report Posted February 18, 2008 i had a egg laid just after i had stoped this hen from breeding so i took it out and put it down just out side the loft and i forgot all about it 2 days later after the egg had been out in the cold and we had a frost i went into my stock loft to find a egg had been broken i was in abit of a rush and mistook the egg on the floor for a pot egg and placed it in the nest to my total amasement both eggs hatched one baby was a blue bar like its parents and was was a red cheqer thats when it dawned on me that it was a red cheqer hen i had taken the egg from and it had hatched evern after being in a frost out side so i would give it a go i still have the red chqer hen

Guest IB Posted February 18, 2008 Report Posted February 18, 2008 Don't think there will be any problem, temperature inside loft will be slightly higher than outside, and the nest will add a bit of protection against cold. Birds 'cover' the first egg differently. Mine stand over it, with body well above it and I'm sure there's no heat applied.

Guest Vic Posted February 18, 2008 Report Posted February 18, 2008 There's more chance of Easter eggs melting in this climate of ours.

NANCYVIEWLOFTS Posted February 18, 2008 Report Posted February 18, 2008 just a point on freezing drinkers if you cut a thermolite block in half then cut a half circle in each block then push them together and put them on another thermolite block then place the drinker inside the hole this generates warmth and stops the water freezing
Guest Vic Posted February 18, 2008 Report Posted February 18, 2008 Just like your grey matter Ho! I forgot about Humpty dumpty. ;D ;D

Peckedhen Posted February 22, 2008 Author Report Posted February 22, 2008 Too soon yet Craig. I'll let you know.
Peckedhen Posted February 29, 2008 Author Report Posted February 29, 2008 Out of ten eggs laid over the cold snap, four were empty.
billy wilson Posted February 29, 2008 Report Posted February 29, 2008 what about canary eggs, after each egg is laid they are taken out of the nest and placed in a drawer and pot eggs are put under the hen until she layers her cluch after five days the pot eggs are replaced with the eggs from the drawer and i know myself when i was putting the eggs back under her they were icy cold, the idea is to try and get all young birds to hatch at the same time once the eggs are put under the hen they hatch in thirteen days billy ;D ;D ;D ;D
Peckedhen Posted February 29, 2008 Author Report Posted February 29, 2008 Thanks Billy, I did do this with the first eggs but, as I didn't get them the before the first freezing night it was too late. It may not have been the frost, it could well have happened anyway. :-/
