phelo84 Posted March 7, 2008 Report Posted March 7, 2008 My first round of young well my 2 chicks are now a week old and i have noticed that 1 chick is somewhat larger the the other as these are my 1st ever set of young i am quite worried about this smaller chick any advice

sapper756 Posted March 7, 2008 Report Posted March 7, 2008 Not unusual, the large one tends to be a cock, and the small one a hen. As long as they are both feeding, all should be well.

Oyster shell grit and a normal pigeon corn is there some other things i should be feeding them and if so what should i be feeding them

pjc Posted March 7, 2008 Report Posted March 7, 2008 An ounce per oldbird is not enough if they are feeding young! They need plenty of food. There are a lot of minnerals available but easiest to offer the birds pick pots, you may find they will gorge on these at first if they have been deprived them and either use a multi vit like johnsons tonic in the water or use a feed supliment like Aviform.

pjc Posted March 7, 2008 Report Posted March 7, 2008 keep it clean around the bowl but don't worry about in the bowl. the young birds will do most of it over the edge of the bowl as they don't like sitting in messy bowls. When the young are about 15 days old the parents will start to think about going to nest again, at this point put them a 2nd clean bowl in the box if you have room and they will lay in there. This will allow you to remove the soiled bowl and clean it ready for reuse after they youngbirds are weaned.

pjc Posted March 7, 2008 Report Posted March 7, 2008 If you only have a small loft and don't have room to part the adults, you may want to race them paired, not sure what your plan is? When the hen has laid her 2nd egg then put pot eggs in and when the young are weaned then replace the soiled bowl and put the eggs in the clean bowl with whatever nesting material you are using. When you are new, no question is a silly question!

pjc Posted March 7, 2008 Report Posted March 7, 2008 just use your dummy eggs and then seperate the birds when you get your new loft. You don't want to keep disturbing them any more than you have to. Do the birds fly out?
Peckedhen Posted March 7, 2008 Report Posted March 7, 2008 They need food and water in front of them 24/7 when they are feeding youngsters.Also grit and minerals. I would just replace the next eggs with dummy eggs until you get your new loft. If you haven't room to put a second nest bowl in the nestbox the birds will just find a corner of the loft to nest especially if you are using deep litter. Once they have laid you cannot move the eggs or they will abandon them.
phelo84 Posted March 7, 2008 Author Report Posted March 7, 2008 will do all this advice is much appreciated i should have done more research before getting any birds didn't realise how much there was to know and learn but i am enjoying them with my sons i cant wait to get the other loft up and get a kit of birds flying i am then going to look into getting a few racers and maybe join our nearest club will take 1 step at a time for now
