Hi

Just a quick question. When young birds get lost howcomes they dont get reported? What actually happens to them. Dont they seek out other lofts? Do they become strays? Would some people actually keep them even tho they have a tel nr ring on their leg? I have lost four so far and not one has been reported. So just wondering.

Cheers

Tell me about it!    I fly rollers keep losing birds, as well as club rings on my birds also have a ring with my phone number on, but still no trace of where these birds go to a bit like the Bermuda triangle,or is it that people just can not be bothered!

9 out of 10 birds reported are not wanted back! The owners are always, ill and can't collect, don't drive, pensioners and can't afford amtrak etc etc etc!

Then they tell you how well bred the bird is!

Is it any wonder people don't bother reporting strays to getting sob stories!

I wish some one would phone me to tell me where 9 out of 10 of my lost birds are! in fact 1 out of 10 would be nice.

Its fine and dandy and I will defo report a bird if and when I get one, but the babies I lost are very wanted and I will do anything to get them back. Surely there must still be some guys who wont mind reporting lost strays (just not in my area ;D). I just hope someone finds them and calls me.

How disapointing to hear that the fellow fanciers wan't report birds that have come into there lofts. imagen this, a young lad/lass just starting out he/she has saved all there pocket money to buy a pair of stock birds and breed 4 lovely young ones of them they have trained them feed and watered them watched them grow, and then in the first race they have not quite made it home but landed in some other fanciers loft. and god knows what happens to them then. this young fancier will be devastated. everything lost in one race. i thought we were trying to keep this sport of ours going.

We do report them, thats why we can speak from experience but I know a lot who no longer bother because the majority don't want them back if they have made a mistake or won't pay Amtrak fees! Ferrits eat well!

good attitude i suppose the sport will go on for ever. a 2p phone call is not that expensive to help young fanciers

I for one will not reject a pigeon. I mean I had it in the first place so obviously I wanted it. I will also report any pigeon I find (although till this day I have not had one for some reason).

I hope I never get any of mine reported. Yes I thought it worthy of a place in my loft to start with but now it has got lost and enterd someone elses loft I know its true worth. I will kill any which come back in a box. It sounds harsh to some I know but it is a fact and many others are just the same as me.

Some of the best birds i have ever flown have been reported as young birds.

eg.. cwh 00wd 1601 lost as a young bird and reported on the coast.

She went on to win 8 firsts 1 second and a second fed . She also bred my combine winner.

I also had a blue cock that was reported 3 times as a young bird and he took bird of the year in the club twice as a old bird.

Not all young birds deserve the bin because of a odd mistake.

some of the best birds do mess up but they only do it once .

some pigeon men ask for the bird to be put in the bin.

and i think this is the best some times.

if the bird is no good for them its no good for me.

All birds make mistakes especialy youngbirds or how else will they learn?

A few years ago a pigeon dropped into me one sat afternoon, clearly racing, I rang the owner who collected the bird on the Sunday as the bird had just gone past its loft. The following 2 wks the bird topped the fed and won RPRA awards that season and the following season!

Never be to hasty to bin a bird, we all make mistakes don't we?

If everyone reported at least 1 bird a year I bet a lot of us would make more friends in the sport and we would all be happier with our birds/returns

i lost 14 young birds all at the same time 3 weeks ago i am new to this sport and was told to get a wing stamp with my phone no on  wich i did but i have not had 1 call  and i would send or collect my young birds as i need them

Think there are far too many assumptions being made here.

Think most fanciers would be interested in at least knowing what happened to their pigeon.

Pigeon might go into another loft because its injured.

Surely the bird is allowed 1 mistake? Or do perfect pigeon fanciers exist that don't make mistakes?

karl , i'm sorry. i only started in 2005 and have had similar experiences .  but before you know it you will have to many pigeons. buy a second wingstamp with 'novice' on it . stamp one wing with it and put your tel. no. on other. its the only thing i can think of. you've plenty of time to breed some more. enjoy what you've got and enjoy the journey towards having a full team and being a 'flyer' (don't rush). ;)

the assumption on this thread is that a lot of lost ybs end up in other lofts. but consider the rpra 1 loft race 1000 birds start and after the best management, training  and,ok tough(?), race programme only 350 remain.thus 65% are awol . repatriations are only 50 so only about 1 in 14 are reported. so where are the rest? i don't think they are in lofts with fanciers 'rubbing their hands with glee'  . i think they are gone forever
