Rewards or Awards?

What is the opinion of you guys, regarding the rewards or awards for winning. Perhaps Vic is now too long in the tooth by making a statement like this. But seeeing that most of us are "getting on" AND WITH THE COST OF LIVING & PIGEON RACING SPIRALING! I think that the we should have less trophies within in our clubs thesedays. Let's face it! your first winning trophy is always the biggest. Sometimes, I must admit, I have collected a seasons haul and stored them out of sight for almost twelve months, never seeing the light of day.

Most trophies these days are rather gruesome looking, with most being fom the year dot.

Then we have all the work involved with engraving etc. Is it worth it?  Why cant we just race to try and  recover the cost of sending our birds.

VIC I THINK YOU ARE WRONG IF MY BIRDS WIN IT IS NOT THE MONEY THAT I AM LOOKING FOR IT IS THE TROPHIE TO BRING HOME TO MY KIDS TO SHOW THEM WHAT IT IS ALL ABOUT

There is nothing nicer than a silver trophy or shield awarded for race winners but I do hate these stupid plastic things, usualy with the birds beaks etc broken off!

Fair comment mate, I would have said exactly the same not very too long back.  But times have changed, and we have to grin or growl and bear it.

I agree with wings, my kids still, mention the big trophies i had, and to have your name on them for other members to see your past achevements , and it will be rembered for a lot longer than a few quid.  If you feel that you dont want your name on the trophy tell them you will have the £4 odd in cash , and if trophys a bit tired buy some new ones and donate them to your club. Awards mean you have achieved something aint that he hole point of racing in the first place , the sense of hard work decication selecting stock breeding and hoping to have reared and raced a real champion.

Surely what I am trying to say is, years ago when most clubs were four times the size as they are today. Plenty of glitter was needed, with big prize presentations etc etc etc.  Plenty of clubs, including my own, haven't had a presentation for a number of years. Trophies should be awarded amidst appreciationists of ths great game. If not,  Stick 'em.

Some of your statement i will agree with but there are clubs with prestige such as the Scottish National Flying Club and the Lanarkshire Social Circle etc that i fly in myself, now were you to come to one of these presentations nights and see the quality of these trophies with history of going back 80-90 years you would agree with me that these trophies that the legends of yesteryear are engraved on are worth winning, i would agree with you that a lot of clubs have crap trophies made of plastic and when it comes to the club engraving them it costs more than the trophie itself.

An example Vic

Joined Larkhall 6 years ago and before i joined the club they passed a rule that outwith the old, yb and combined average, that all trophies become nomination trophies were you have to pay a fee to enter them. now what sometimes happens is that you get a trophie that is for the 1st bird in cheltenham only to find out that the 1st 6 birds are not entered into the trophie which in turn de-values the trophie all because of the expense of the engraving.

I think thet there is a great danger that winning could be devalued and that money will be all that there is to win. I agree with Gareth and would like to add that it should be an honour to have our names added to these old trophies along-side some of the late/great names of the past. People who once upon a time we aspired to be like. I have raced in clubs where people were more interested in who won the pools rather than the race. The pooler may not have been in the first 10 but a few quid meant more to some than actually winning the race. For me it was a poor second to being first.

Yes there are probably a lot of trophies that are past there best and maybe need replaced, but remember in most clubs it is usually the minority that win the majority.

ok, Gareth I see your point, regarding feds, combines , amals etc. But I am talking about the small time clubs which, unfortunately most of  us race in. We, in our club have trophies going back, donated by good flyers from the past. A trophy for every race almost. It  can become a burden when they have to be allocated to  the winners each year. All that glitters is not gold, springs to mind.

My clubs presentation is like a community get together. I live in a rural area and our presentation is held at our local club. Up to 150 people come to the presentation night for a 3 course meal followed by a presentation of the trophys and two sets of artists usually a comedian and a band. I think the most important part of winning anything is the presentation of a trophy in front of all your friends and family what a great feeling it is.

i won my first trophie in 1958,,the feeling i got as a young lad was fantastic,,,,,,so why take it away from anyone nowadays ,, a trophie to a new starter will keep him in the sport ,  and make him [or her[ aim for more  :)

That may be true & one would never wish to take away the pleasure of a trophy, for those that treasure them. "But" for many old timers  ;) ;) ;) they are just dust collectors & a damm nuisance in my view  :) :) :). Now !!!!!! how we solved this problem etc here, was we allowed anyone who chose too, if they had won a few in the one season etc, the value of the trophy's in cash. but they then had to buy something of value to them, with a receipt for the club as evidence of the purchase. Then this was then presented to them at the presentation day/night, in place of the trophy. Much better all round ;D ;D ;D as the wifes mostly brought the gifts etc, so they were very very happy.

Enjoy.
