indian fantail problems

can anyone tell me why my fantail sits on loft and hangs head literally upside down . . he,s only young and has seemed healthy up until now..

Sounds like you have a serious problem. 'Stargazing' is a symptom of a disease which attacks the nervous system. It can be viral or bacterial, and only a vet can tell you which. There is no cure and all forms are highly contagious.

 

Sorry, but if you have other birds and you want to prevent it spreading, this one at least has to go. Isolate it and get it to a vet to be euthanised. Sounds bad, but at least you will then know what you are dealing with, where the disease probably came from, and what needs to be done with / for your other birds and loft.

The vet prefers the bird taken in alive to carry out an autopsy, or at least get the droppings tested, I would send the live bird as it will get you the best diagnosis, if you have a defra or avian vet nearby I think they are the best to deal with your problem. They then send a report to your local vet for any treatment required, if you go to your local vet and he does not deal with avian problems he will just send it to defra for examination, so I would cut out the middle man to get a quicker diagnosis :-/

take the bird out of your loft straight away and desinfect all perches floors drinkers every thing and keep an eye on your other birds for the next week check there dropings make sure they are not watery and give them some probiotics in the water
