cokacola Posted April 8, 2008 Report Posted April 8, 2008 I have no reason to be removing a ring, I was just wondering, people talk about removing rings, well how do you do it without harming the pigeon? Are their like special cutters?

Are their like special cutters? 2 Pair of hands ;D ;D ;D 1 small angle grinder, & a metal cutting disc etc, will do the job nicely :'( :'( :'( as long as you don't shake ;) like I do. Enjoy.

Guest chrisss Posted April 8, 2008 Report Posted April 8, 2008 never done it but id imagine a good snips had to do it once, had a bird with a smashed up leg [a stray, the owner oked it,the owner wanted it back it was an escaped stockbird] but i would not recomend it had to use snips as well
just ask me Posted April 8, 2008 Report Posted April 8, 2008 yeah chriss what would u use if the leg had overgrown the ring size this seems to be a problem in the last few years or was this always the case and is there a need to make the rings a little bigger as i think pigeons in generall are a little bigger than what they used to be

Lennut Tar Posted April 9, 2008 Report Posted April 9, 2008 to be honest mate [and no offence here] i would not let it get that far i would still use the snips [mine are very small and take it very slowly]as for the rings getting smaller i have read that a lot of guys are saying that anyone got any thoughts on this? Chrisss !!!!!!!! Rings can be ordered in all different sizes, depending on the different breeds one could say etc, or the size of the pigeon. Before the imports come in here (Late 80's) we would not have changed the size of the rings in 25 odd years "Small birds" small rings !!!!!!! here. I still remember the day even now & it was years ago, that one of the big studs here showed off all his new imports. Well, I "PMSL" at the time, along with my mates. They were all like chooks etc & I had never seen anything like it in my life, :D he was a good mate of Louelles, & As one could say !!!!!!! their is mates & their is mates ??????????.But the only way these pigeons on the day would have got home, was as if the walked ;D ;D ;D. Now !!!!! Pigeon flyers being Pigeon flyers (Not me) but we have enlarged our ring size twice since then to my knowledge & when I look at some of the pigeons in the units on basket night etc I just "LMFAO" when there beside my little runts ;) . Enjoy.
Merlin Posted April 9, 2008 Report Posted April 9, 2008 yeah chriss what would u use if the leg had overgrown the ring size this seems to be a problem in the last few years or was this always the case and is there a need to make the rings a little bigger as i think pigeons in generall are a little bigger than what they used to be Irsih Homing Union have increased the diamater of rings this seson 08,for removing rings which I have done in the past a bull nose snips,as used by electricians is the most adequate I find. Just my opinion
pjc Posted April 9, 2008 Report Posted April 9, 2008 Small pointed snips do the job, snip top and bottom of ring on 2 sides and the plastic comes off the snip through the alloy, its very soft! Lennut, yes you can get different size rings but if you intend showing or raceing them they must carry a recognised ring which will be a specific size. We have larger rings for show racers now but we can not race them with show racer/ size C rings on. Phil
Guest Posted April 9, 2008 Report Posted April 9, 2008 I had to remove a ring tonight,it had to come of a 11 year old cock. The cock is kept because he is a great feeder.i used snips to brake the plastic cutting from each side and removing, then i used nail clippers to cut throught the aluminium.Came off easily.

Peckedhen Posted April 9, 2008 Report Posted April 9, 2008 I've used one of these to safely cut a ring off a finger. They could be used in the same way on a bird. http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/NEW-FINGER-RING-CUTTER-SAWING-PLIERS-RINGSAGEZANGEN_W0QQitemZ130212405561QQcmdZViewItem?hash=item130212405561
cokacola Posted April 9, 2008 Author Report Posted April 9, 2008 Wow, interesting to hear of everyone's methods. Peckedhen - that's particularly ingenious
mark163 Posted April 9, 2008 Report Posted April 9, 2008 i had to cut the ring the of this cock last week it was so tight i could not even turn it i tried cutters but could not get the bottom bit between the ring and the leg so the only way was to cut the plastic with a junior hack saw then cut threw the ali with the cutters that way what i was cutting was thinner found it was easyer that way with out damaging the leg the pigeon is the strawberry mealy in the front of the picture and as you can see he is a big pigeon from the pouws bros which are known for there thick legs
