This is in conection to the loss of y/b thread,Lets discuss ways in which we can re-dress this issue which threatens our very survival as a sport.

What would the implications be if we issued 2009 b/y, rings on the 1st of Sep 2008

Any age racinging starting last week in may, or first week in June 2009.

This could be done in much the same way as we presently race yearlings.

Can i have your thoughts on this, as a radical way, in order to change this y/b madness.

Lets look outside the cube.Anything we discuss is heavyly infuenced by how it is now, hiow we have alwas done it.We need tio get away from this and think in a creative and productive manor.

Delboy forgive the spelling mate,I,ll come up with the ideas and you can spell it mate

Lets here it .There are reasons why we dont, so lets see how many drew backs and advantages we can find.

Happy days

you will never get rings for the following year at that time , that will never happen

The rings are early enough now to have any age racing as they do on the continent.

If you started breeding in the autumn, the birds will still be moulting and need a rest not being continualy bred from.

pjc,

The birds racing the following May could be anything from 4 months to 9 months old, just what each fancier would choice to do would be up to them as it is very much now.

Any thoughts on the increases numbers going in the same direction.

Any thoughts on the fact that y/bsickness, would be well behind them before the mixed in the basket

Posted

there is nothing in the rules to stop youngbirds being sent witht the oldbirds but would you want to put a 12 wk y/bird in the basket with a dozen widowhood cocks?

Youngbird sickness will happen at anytime, usualy when stressed so in my opinion this would not reduce it.

Youngbird racing should only ever be for education, they are only youngbirds for 1 season but could be in your race team for 5 years!

ban young bird raceing altogether and train only race as yearlings only

i've been thinking exactly the same thing....but yb racing generates lots of money and those that benefit aren't going to be happy. the money also helps our unions...so i think WICC's idea would be worth a try but rings about oct/nov . we are loosing new starters who get disheartned by racing ybs when, its not a true representation of pigeon racing.

one of the problems as i see is, as normal money,in years gone by young bird racing was for education only, now there is so much cash invovled, people keep breeding more and more young birds,to counter real or percieved losses, that and generations of untried birds, rushed into a little bit of training [because of the weather]everyone panics because of the averages,i know of guys who were training their birds before they were even running, clashing also plays its part, banning young bird racing would never happen [if only it could be]

Spin,

One other thing, many fanciers are in a position to keep say 40/50 y/b for thre four months.

I think this would prove expensive, thus leading to quality, rather than quantity

In addition i am saying why are w on the verge of our young bird National, at a time of year that is our new monsoon season.Last week people weas being assisted from Airdrie railway station due to floods.

There are many such examples of changes to our weather patern, however we still do things cause we have always done them.

We need to think outside the box in order to try and change things round.

there,s no law saying you must race young birds  its up to everybody personal choice, lots of people only train them in their own tim e without the rush for first race

trouble is there is a sort of 'herd mentality' .come the new year we'll all be breeding/pairing/thinking about pairing etc........then we'll train...then we'll race....then we'll swear not to do it again...but we will in case we 'miss out'.

Hope you dont mind mw jumping on your thread WICC

What If? what if we changed the whole way we race young birds the way we know it. What if the highest velocity counted for nothing. What if the velocity was worked out not on your first pigeon home but your last. What if you don’t get 100% returns? simple, you're out of the race. What if it were to be made a minimum of 10 birds per member, no advantage to be gained in sending more, in fact it would be a disadvantage to do so.

Emphasis has to be put on getting teams home, not getting one pigeon home out of a team to determine the result.

I dont think for one minute this is the answer but I feel it would take something as radical as this to buck the trend.
