pj1001 Posted September 28, 2008 Report Posted September 28, 2008 I think L Tuplin & Son of Galabank Lofts still has the old Barker pigeons. I know a fancier in our area bought some off him a couple of years back. PJ
jimmy_bulger Posted September 28, 2008 Report Posted September 28, 2008 google is quite good for pigeon info just type in barker pigeons
Guest shadow Posted September 28, 2008 Report Posted September 28, 2008 he is still racing and winning with them in the Lincolnshire & south humberside federation
jimmy white Posted September 28, 2008 Report Posted September 28, 2008 just going from memory ,, the book,," creation of a strain," i think it was called ,,,,,,,,another of my books that dissapeared, ;D,,,,,, going by this book , the first racing pigeons were ,, the leige pigeon, the antwerp pigeon, and another two, on the tip of my tongue [places in belgium ] pigeons ;D ,, these were blue bars and blue cheqs , so it really would be interesting to find out where and when, dr barker,s , silver , dunn, type pigeons originated. just out of curiosity the nickname " a right twerp" [please dont answer that ;D] seemingly came from the" antwerp pigeon", these fanciers in the late 1800,s came over to london to sell these birds in the markets,, the buyers of these birds were told to make a loft , then let these out and they would stay with them,, being homing pigeons? yes, they were homing pigeons, ;D they homed back to antwerp ;D whereby the owners would repeat this action , making themselves money from these , each time ,,,,these buying fanciers were then called " twerps" by the more sensible fanciers in london, then the name "a real twerp" spread across the land , meaning a person who was easily gulled ,,,this, allthough sounding rediculous, is in fact true ;D
ChrisMaidment08 Posted September 28, 2008 Report Posted September 28, 2008 my brother used to do that in 70 s made few bob at it tell them keep in a week let um out they never came back mind
paddymac Posted September 28, 2008 Report Posted September 28, 2008 Although not involved in the Antwerpt transactions I can identify with the purchasers as regards buying pigeons from local fanciers when I decided to take up the hobby. They loved to see me coming and nine times out of ten I was buying back the same Pigeons :'( :'(

Guest cloudview Posted September 30, 2008 Report Posted September 30, 2008 found book this afternoon creation of astrain barkers are stanhopes , logans,, grooters.
OLDYELLOW Posted September 30, 2008 Report Posted September 30, 2008 the grooters will be the influence in the silvers as there were yellows in the Grooters
jimmy white Posted September 30, 2008 Report Posted September 30, 2008 found book this afternoon creation of astrain barkers are stanhopes , logans,, grooters. youve knocked it off their cloudveiw,, and old yellows post seems to clinch the colour part,,,, the grooters as there were most definately silvers and yellows in them,, now i also know how jim williams had quite a few silvers [as he had the grooters]
pj1001 Posted September 30, 2008 Report Posted September 30, 2008 The old Irish Walkinshaw strain also contains a lot of silvers and ashes also. I am not sure if this is via the Kirkpatrick influence in the breed or not. PJ
OLDYELLOW Posted September 30, 2008 Report Posted September 30, 2008 i have handled a few of the walkingshaws before they did seem like the kirkpatrick type lovely birds
bluey Posted September 30, 2008 Report Posted September 30, 2008 Dr Barker and Northrop Barker are two different fanciers. J W Logan bought out Northrop Barker. I can`t deny that Croston Barkers, Galabank Barkers, or Edmondson Barkers or any other Barkers are not bred down from Northrop Barker pigeons. My qestion is how can anyone say what is a 'Barker' after so much time when all his birds became 'Logans'
