invalidusername Posted May 1, 2008 Report Posted May 1, 2008 Is it necessary to mix grit with food, or in a bowl next to the food? Will birds know what to do with it if seperate? Many thanks.
pjc Posted May 1, 2008 Report Posted May 1, 2008 Hi David, Nice to meet you last night, sorry couldn't stay and chat longer, damn work always gets in the way of the pigeons! Give grit in a seperate pot, only give a small ammount at a time and change it every couple of days so its always fresh, same with minerals. Phil

Phil Why does the grit have to be fresh, We have ours in a hopper and they peck away whenever they want
mac1 Posted May 1, 2008 Report Posted May 1, 2008 pick pots are not fresh every couple of days, thats what mine get cost a bit too much to chuck after a day or two
DOVEScot Posted May 1, 2008 Report Posted May 1, 2008 pick pots are not fresh every couple of days, thats what mine get cost a bit too much to chuck after a day or two And grit itself is years old in the making :-/
pjc Posted May 1, 2008 Report Posted May 1, 2008 it depends what type of grit and what type of grit pots, some absorbs moisture and open pots can be soiled so I prefer to give it fresh daily to prevent wastage. Phil

invalidusername Posted May 1, 2008 Author Report Posted May 1, 2008 pick pots are not fresh every couple of days, thats what mine get cost a bit too much to chuck after a day or two I think pjc had my circumstances in mind with his reply. With only 2 pigeons, and with only a little grit in a small pot, it's not going to break me to change it regularly. Thanks.

Phil this is the best way, in my opinion too,,,,,,,grit,,, mineral..pots . soon get soiled and become a haven for worm oocysts [eggs] and cocci,, ,,,,cheap enough to keep fresh , a teaspoonfull would do a pair a couple of days ,,,,,but when feding young, they will eat [and need a lot more ] best of luck
