jimmy_84 Posted May 20, 2008 Report Posted May 20, 2008 Hi guys quick question i have only 4 birds now had 12 but wasn't finding it easy to train them into a pattern so was told by local fancier to cut my birds down which i have done and i cut there feed and still no result with them although i must say they fly home if i take them out 15miles away they fly home and in good time to but trying to get them to exercise at home is a problem they just sit on the roof and if i try flag them off they sit across the street on there roof i kept the best of the bunch but still no joy any ideas or should i try starting over again
Wiley Posted May 20, 2008 Report Posted May 20, 2008 birds should really want to fly and once they lose that gets the mind boggling, first questions would be what and how much are you feeding?

Guest MBpigeonguy Posted May 20, 2008 Report Posted May 20, 2008 maby they are too young? pigeon love too fly, unless they are fat! :X
jimmy_84 Posted May 20, 2008 Author Report Posted May 20, 2008 thanx guys yes age was a concern but the distance they fly when i basket them and release them they do fine it is just when i let them out for exercise. i have 1 cock bird 12months old and 3 ybs approx 8 weeks old the feed is 1oz per bird of a general pigeon corn i had tumblers before and they did fine but they went and the racers are hard to get them flying the only problem is the they sit on the roof i will keep them in for a few days and observe them see what happens and get regularaty and routine to them maybe the problem was loosing the other 8 birds made them worried anymore advice much appreciated

jimmy_84 Posted May 20, 2008 Author Report Posted May 20, 2008 birds love to fly canker and worms would be my first thought what do i need to do and where can i get the treatment from
mark proctor Posted May 20, 2008 Report Posted May 20, 2008 jimmy it will be very very difficult for 4 pigeons to fly around and around ..realey you need a bigish batch for them to do that ..so they keep each other up mate...if i just let 4 birds out i bet they wouldnt fly for long..but if i let my batch of 41 y birds out i would get a hour plus out of them...these lads on this sight will put you right mate ..there a great bunch.... ;) ;) ;) ;) ps get there feed right and they should fly alot longer than they are now....all the best mark....
Guest shadow Posted May 20, 2008 Report Posted May 20, 2008 watch them and see if its the same bird that drops first, if it is keep it in and let the others out and see if there is any improvement never stand near the loft when they are out try and find somewhere you can see them but they cannot see you that way they will not think they are going to be fed. I used to lock mine out and although they might land after 20 mins. they would then strike of and continue flying keep them out longer each day until you get at least 45 mins out of them light feed on a morning and the main feed at night after exercise you must get them into a routine
Guest IB Posted May 20, 2008 Report Posted May 20, 2008 Been there, 1st year with mostly YBs is the worst. Next year you will have a couple of OBs to help show next year's YBs the score. I let my YBs roof-hop for the 1st couple of weeks, after that I lob a brightly coloured ball on the roof. My 1st year they reached 4 houses down, but I spoke to my neighbour and told him what I was doing and why, and asked permission to go down and ball his roof whenever the birds went down there; in just a couple of days the birds took off when they saw me walking down the road [they see the ball being carried and ken what that means] and none of my birds hit any roof after that first few weeks. I think 1 oz per bird per day is a bit on the light side. Should be at least double that? They are still growing, and they start moulting almost as soon as they are shifted. Mine are 1 oz mornings, and 1 1/2 oz evenings. Maybe your birds are thinking of their 'empty stomachs' when out. Hungry birds are the same as overfed birds - they don't want to fly. 8 weeks old is also a bit soon to expect them to turn into flying machines or rake the skies for an hour or so. They are still learning to master this flying lark and its really all a new game to them, but a right pain to you and me trying to get them to do what we want. Just keep at it.

jimmy_84 Posted May 21, 2008 Author Report Posted May 21, 2008 that morning feed seems to have made plenty of difference they have flown plenty they come rest on roof then of flying again maybe i am sorted now thanx again guys
