How can a pigeon get out of the entrance hole of a sputnik?  Anyone else had this happen?

mine used to regulary do it was mainly hens , the fly up grab bar with feet fold wings up and pop out , this was many years ago  i find if you only let them have the landboard open on entry they never learn that way out bit late now they have worked it out , you could change to bobwires tho

Cheers for that!  It only happened for the first time yesterday - but they always exit by the main sliding doors (which I close immediately), then they arrive back via the landing board.  I leave the sliding door to the slot entrance until I get home, but will definitely check out the bobwire suggestion.

Just put a bit tubing around the bars of the sputnik, this narrows it slightly and sometimes helps, once they realise they can't get out the stop trying :)

Many thanks for the suggestion - good thinking!  Sorry for delay in replying (been in meetings all afternoon).  :)

Oh heck David.

I had a couple of birds that started to escape. I solved it by placing a piece of wood about 1" deep by 1/4" by 4' lengthways along the bottom of the popholes. I don't know how it worked, but it did!

Have a great Christmas.

any of the ideas, wood or tubeing works by making the hole smaller although eventualy some will master a new technic. Best to keep the holes covered when the birds are in, not only prevents escape but also prevents cats etc from being able to enter.
