Hi David, good to see your back and the birds are looking well. Getting birds homed is a big event to every fancier ( even, you know who )(evil) Ain't it just great to see them out in the sky where they belong. Would like to see a pic of the hen from PJC as well. The pied is a nice youngster too and adds a wee bit variation in colour to the loft. I see Junior's kept the bronze in his bars after moulting ( it may change with the next moult though, but I hope he keeps it ) You've a good mentor in PJC. Not only is he well up on all things pigeon, he also has a very open attitude and his ego is well under control. He doesn't do things for prizes nor for attention but purely for the love of a wee bird with a big heart. I know some will be puking at this but hey, I don't give a SH*T. Credit where credit's due. Old blue boy picked you for a good reason coz lets face it he may have ended up in a certain person's ( who will remain nameless for security reasons(wiseman)) and we ALL know what would have happened to him. Take care and keep us informed as to what's happening in the loft.

How is the white doing David :)

He's doing well, cheers Duncan.  He's been out with the hen (Penny) that pjc also have me.  They both go out an in a treat.  I'm so pleased that Penny has settled in, because although her wing had been clipped as she's a 6yr old (and I only had her this summer), I let the feathers grow back and she's homing really well. Berwyn (the white) has a massive wingspan, and looks brilliant.

I'll get a pic of Penny up, although she's had a bit of a moult ;)

The amount of advice I've had from Phil (pjc) has been invaluable, and has given me a huge amount of confidence.

Keep posting David, the narrative and insight you give us as regards your birds is like a breath of fresh air,and for any one who doesn't enjoy, quite sure there are hundreds that do,keep it up,you have an enjoyment quality regarding your birds that can only be admired.

Cheers for your replies everyone.  My big challenge at the moment is enabling all four of them to go out at the same time, and ensure they come back in fairly quickly and see it as an exercise flight rather than a chance to go off and do their own thing!!

Bluey has a tendency to go off, and stay out overnight sometimes.  He's probably going back to where he used to roost for the 2 years he was in the wild - but I don't think he's being fed wherever it is, as he always comes back ready to eat.  Junior goes out with him, but as he was born in the shed, he comes back, even if it's on his own.

Penny and Berwyn have been ranging, so are finding their way around together.  But I don't want Bluey leading those two into bad habits.  I'm trying to get a critical mass of them in and out, which might encourage Bluey to follow suit.  We'll see!  Sorry if that doesn't make sense!

David, unfortunately once a bird has developed the habit of going off and staying out overnight it is almost impossible to correct. If he is going to a clock tower or bridge he will bill with a feral hen and eventually bring some nasty illness back to your loft. If I recall when you initially acquired him he was ill. Even if he was visiting another loft, the fact that he was once quite ill supports the overall problem. I know you would like to see him free and flying with the others, but being locked permanently in the loft will not harm him at all and will protect the biosecurity of your loft. For what it is worth.

Thanks Larry, and I remember very clearly you saying that, and I'm very conscious of your advice.  I'd be very surprised if there are any feral pigeons around my neck of the woods, but even then, picking up something and bringing it back is a fear of mine.

I think his needs as a bird, and the freedom he's gained may override mine, but I realise I need to protect the other three (at the moment) he shares a shed with.  I'll do my best and see what happens.  I can review it one way or the other.

Many thanks.

PS:  For anyone worrying that I'll be eating pigeon over the holiday period - fear not.  I haven't eaten meat for 26 years, and don't intend to start now ;)

You too, Phil - hope you all have a great time.  Thanks for all your help this year - they're all going out now - and I'm so pleased that Penny is homing brilliantly, and Berwyn's a sight for sore eyes!

Thanks to everyone else for their help and advice this year.  Happy Christmas to all x
