paul10121968 Posted August 7, 2008 Report Posted August 7, 2008 Bath time - pic taken because they (Blue Boy and Junior) looked so content, and also it's the first bit of sun I've seen in days (taken yesterday evening). a daddys boy allright
invalidusername Posted August 8, 2008 Author Report Posted August 8, 2008 Cheers for the comments about Junior, guys. As my first ever hatchling, I'm very proud of him/her. S/he and Blue Boy are now going out in the morning as well as the evening, and Junior's keeping up with his dad :-) About 20 minutes this morning, and back in before I left for work. Pretty much flew straight back onto the landing board and not much loitering before going in. I'll have more of that please ;-D ;-D I let them out yesterday morning, then went into the shed to change their water. Realised I'd left their feed in there overnight and had a slight panic that they'd be out all day as they weren't hungry. But, they still came back and went in quickly as usual. I was really pleased as it's not now just about hunger bringing them back.
Peckedhen Posted August 8, 2008 Report Posted August 8, 2008 The photos are great, junior is a credit to you. Sounds like dad is well and truly stayed, David. If junior is a hen he may well start making advances on her soon. : (I'll bet someone on here can tell the gender from the photos now).

Crikey - one of my worst fears! pjc has kindly let me have a hen for Blue Boy, and he's been battling for a week to entice her, but she doesn't want to know (yet). I just hope she succumbs before there's any family hanky panky (if, that is, Junior turns out to be a lady) ;-D
invalidusername Posted August 16, 2008 Author Report Posted August 16, 2008 Well, Bluey and Junior went out for an hour or so yesterday morning, then went out again at about 5.15 yesterday evening. After over 2 hours (!), neither were back. 3.5 hours later, and home flies Junior. Well, at least s/he got home alone. No sign of Bluey all night. I let Junior out this morning (I had a lie in, so it was about 7.50). I looked in the shed at about 10.15, and Junor and Bluey were back in the shed. It's almost as if Junior went off to fetch home Bluey. I think I'm feeding them too much ;-D
invalidusername Posted August 16, 2008 Author Report Posted August 16, 2008 is rosey any more accepting of him? Not really, Phil. But he's not quite as insistent as he was. However, he sits on the nest cooing a bit? She's able to get on top of a box now, so I think she feels less vulnerable. She's lovely - I hold her every day, but she flaps me with her wings - she gives a nasty slap!
ChrisMaidment08 Posted August 16, 2008 Report Posted August 16, 2008 probley cosidering his childrens feelings be for dropping them out the loft i mean you know women other womens children i know of good foster home if she does
invalidusername Posted August 16, 2008 Author Report Posted August 16, 2008 haha, Chris, they're staying put ;D
Guest Freebird Posted August 16, 2008 Report Posted August 16, 2008 haha, Chris, they're staying put ;D Seriously though if the youngster is a hen you'll need to keep an eye on the old hen in case she has a go at it. As long as there is plenty room and the wee one can get away onto a perch it should be o.k. Don't want the wee felly / felly'es getting a bad experience.
pjc Posted August 16, 2008 Report Posted August 16, 2008 the young ones out flying and capable of looking after itself. The hen David now has, has had its wing clipped but hasn't long been parted so will need time to settle before she starts to show interest in blue boy.

I've not seen any trouble between the new hen and Junior, but I'll definitely keep my eyes peeled. They've got plenty of space (there's only 3 of them in a 6x4 shed) and a selection of perches and shelves, so hopefully that'll help. Many thanks, Freebird
invalidusername Posted August 22, 2008 Author Report Posted August 22, 2008 Hows the flight coming on David? Oh, shut up ;-) It'll be up :-) A few adaptions and...
invalidusername Posted August 22, 2008 Author Report Posted August 22, 2008 Seriously though - isn't it the most wonderful sound when a squeeker finds its voice and start to sound like a sort of mini-pigeon? Mine makes a noise like its just breathed in some helium from a baloon. Sounds so great :-)
bluewhiteflight Posted August 22, 2008 Report Posted August 22, 2008 ive just read some of this thread and seen the picks of the pigeon on page 8 is it true the ticking of the wing feathers is a sign of good health
invalidusername Posted August 23, 2008 Author Report Posted August 23, 2008 ive just read some of this thread and seen the picks of the pigeon on page 8 is it true the ticking of the wing feathers is a sign of good health Well, bluewhiteflight, he's still got that ticking on his wing feathers! His head and the back of his neck are looking a bit rough as he's in moult, but his wing feathers are lovely - still with that ticking! He also has (on his wings) some white powdery bits too. Not sure what this means, but sure some experts here will know.
just ask me Posted August 23, 2008 Report Posted August 23, 2008 powder on the wings great sign some pll in pigeons for years cant get that lol
invalidusername Posted August 23, 2008 Author Report Posted August 23, 2008 haha - didn't take any effort from me - other than 2 yrs in the wild followed by a purpose built shed, dedication, etc. I guess a safe place to come home to is bound to make a pigeon bloom after that lot! :-)
pjc Posted August 23, 2008 Report Posted August 23, 2008 "White powdery stuff" as you say on the wings is bloom, its another indication of condition and that you are doing everything right!
pearse1888 Posted August 27, 2008 Report Posted August 27, 2008 are you breeding in january this year ?
pjc Posted August 28, 2008 Report Posted August 28, 2008 pearse, the original hen got out and hasn't been seen since. Bluey has a new hen ready for the spring and a new addition to the family. Davids up to 4 now and will soon be looking for a bigger loft or garden! Phil
invalidusername Posted August 28, 2008 Author Report Posted August 28, 2008 Ha! Yes, we spoke about that last night, Phil. May need a bit of work at home before I'm allowed to take over any more of the garden ;-) The new addition is a real corker, and I'll let you know how it goes. Thanks again, Phil :-)
