Guest strapper Posted January 18, 2009 Report Posted January 18, 2009 with all the fish stocks depleated in the waters around britain its no wonder when this is happening and nothing is done! the bristol channel has been fishing the worst it has for many many years and so many fishermen reporting this after going home without a fish. take a look for your self at the wastefulness of these so called fishermen on a boat throwing away hundreds of pounds worth of fish. your be shocked! http://www.guardian.co.uk/environment/video/2008/aug/12/fish.trawler.prolific there is an advertisemnet b4 it starts
Guest REDFOXKRAUTHS Posted January 18, 2009 Report Posted January 18, 2009 it is not always our fault i dont like trawlers or netters as i think it is greedy, but when i see this it makes me spare at the government we cannot control what gose into our nets but, we get controled on how much we can land of each speacies per trip per year so it isnt our fault its the government they say it gose back dead or alive and most alive stuff will only die any way due to being crushed

Guest spin cycle Posted January 18, 2009 Report Posted January 18, 2009 it does look (and is) bad strapper...but its the eu quota system thats perhaps to blame. i don't know but perhaps they had quota only for a particular species left to use and caught the rest whilst trying to do so. perhaps they don't like the system and so let themselves be filmed to highlight it. beuraucrats write rules & regulations but rarely anticipate how the will work in practice...i 'm prepared to give those boys the benifit of the doubt until i know more
b.massey Posted January 18, 2009 Report Posted January 18, 2009 Think theres a law where there only allowed to catch so many ton of fish. So if they had nets out for something like prawns and they end up with a lot of fish they have no choice but to dump it sadly. Law is the law. Doubt any trawler man would want to dump it as after all its money they'd be wasting but might not have choice

Yes its a crazy set up.. it is a quota system which ends up with boats dumping tons of small fish or fish of a particular species because the boat has caught its quota of that fish e.g. cod. Boats can have nets made to avoid catching small fish, but how do you stop, for example, cod from entering the net?... hang up a sign on the net saying 'sorry no cod wanted today - haddock only!' Even if they were allowed to land everything including small fish, up to a certain tonnage, the temptation would be to dump poorer value fish and go on to catch more valuable species. In their defence I would say that the whitefish catching industry is an extremely arduous way of make a living and I wouldn't do it for all the doos in Holland!
Guest IB Posted January 18, 2009 Report Posted January 18, 2009 I echo the sentiments of the later posts, and I believe what we are seeing is dumping over-quota or out of season fish. But its far from wasted. Doesn't do stocks of that particular species any favours, but it does get eaten, tho not by us.
