Castletown Homing Society has secured a grant from the Community Foundation's Grassroots Grants programme to increase security for the birds following a spate of break-ins around the region.

The money – which will go towards new window grilles as well as improvements to the electricity supply at the loft – comes at a critical time for the society which will celebrate its 59th anniversary this year.

Ernie Watson, vice-chairman of the society, said: "We don't want to become victim to an arson attack or break-ins like some of the lofts around here have been subject to, so we applied to the Community Foundation for this funding.

"It really was very straightforward and they couldn't have been more helpful."

Now the Community Foundation is encouraging small groups like Castletown Homing Society to apply to Grassroots Grants, which still has more than £75,000 to spend.

Grants of up to £5,000 are available for any constituted group that has a turnover less than £20,000, has been going for more than a year and has a full set of accounts.

Well done.  :)

Good to know that there is a sympathetic source of grants for making allotments more secure.

I still think Local Government Councils could do far more to help.
