Guest Freebird Posted February 22, 2009 Report Posted February 22, 2009 He He! liked the camera shots over the pigeons head. Good vid, Ta.
bluey Posted February 22, 2009 Report Posted February 22, 2009 This is an edited video and shows nothing like the truth. A peregrine will never attempt to strike prey on the ground, if it missed, hitting the Earth at 200 mph would give it more than a head ache. They often hunt in pairs, one will harry the prey to a suitable altitude and then the other will stoop. The nearest thing to the truth in this clip is that a pigeon and a peregrine are closely matched in manouvreing and in level flight.
Guest IB Posted February 22, 2009 Report Posted February 22, 2009 I agree, these films are often different bits of footage cobbled together to look real. My understanding is that a pigeon on level flight is faster than a peregrine. One of the most remarkable bits of film I've seen was a 10 second strap on Discovery, 'hawk and pigeon' showing hawk in its dive and pigeon looking doomed. A split second before the strike the pigeon fell backwards out the sky (and out of the hawk's path) the hawk shot straight past it; they had to replay the clip and slow it down to near stop before you could tell what actually happened. Wondered to this day how the pigeon learned that move, and what kind of pigeon it was? Later learned that there is a bird Oriental Flying Roller that is capable of doing this, and fanciers in US let them out first to shatter the hawks, so leaving the coast clear for their other pigeons.
