Guest Grasshopper Lofts Posted February 27, 2009 Report Posted February 27, 2009 Hi everyone, As you may all know my daughter Courtney was born with a condition called DDH, its where her leg was dislocated at birth and has gone undetected. it was picked up at 2 and as you all saw from the photos the cast and operation was awfull. this can be avoided if picked up at birth. My partner and hundreads of other mums that are part of steps-charity are trying to raise awareness to other parents about the condition so they can pick up signs of DDH themselves we have 2 reports done with BBC NEWS and ITV YORKSHIRE. dont know if anyone saw them Were also trying to get the PCT's to change the hip law in which they check babys hips at birth with ultrasound we have already susscefully changed this law in Jersey but want to change it in the UK. They started their campaign at the house of commons on tuesday in which they were listened to and given the option that if they can get all our MP's to back this campaign then they will look at changing the law and or improving the way they check hips. This is where you all come in we need hundreads of MP's to sign the "early day motion" i would be so gratefull if you could copy the letter i have copy and pasted and send to your local MP. if we can get all MP's to sign this form then it would mean thousands of new parents and babys that our born with DDH or other hip defects can have treatment straight away, this would mean less trauma to the child and there parents. If you need help finding your MP please email me and i will find there information out for you. Help Keep the Baby Hip Screening Campaign going. This is just the start of the campaign; we mustn’t let this momentum slip. It is now essential that we get as many MPs as possible to sign the Early Day Motion (EDM) “STEPS RESEARCH INTO DEVELOPMENT DYSPLASIA OF THE HIP†sponsored by Dave Anderson, MP for Blaydon. Dave was very moved by our ‘hip’ stories and is determined to do all he can to make screening for DDH more efficient. We need to get as many MPs as possible to sign this EDM and we need your help to do this. This is the kind of letter you might wish to write, please use your personal details and story. You do not have to have a child with DDH to ask your MP to support this EDM – all babies have this check therefore it affects every potential parent, grandparent, aunts or uncles etc. Sample letter. Dear As your constituents, we implore you to sign the early day motion number 826 drafted by your fellow MP, David Anderson, MP for Blaydon on 23rd February, entitled STEPS RESEARCH INTO DEVELOPMENT DYSPLASIA OF THE HIP (please see the link below). http://edmi.parliament.uk/EDMi/EDMDetails.aspx?EDMID=37901&SESSION=899 Every baby in the UK has this hip check at birth and 6-8 weeks and because the disability is hidden it is very important that the check is done competently and thoroughly. The health of our children depends on this. The STEPS Baby Hip Screening report launched at the House of Commons on the 24th February revealed that over 50% of Primary Care Trusts have no formal policy or guidelines. It’s hardly surprising that so many babies are missed and have a late diagnosis. You can download a copy of the report from: http://www.steps-charity.org.uk/links/6-207-baby_hip_health_week_2009_the_report.php We are very happy to attend your surgery in person to discuss this in greater detail should you so wish or give you more information by telephone or email. We look forward to hearing from you and again beseech you to become involved in this cause by signing the Early Day Motion. Yours sincerely Name Address: Other contact details[/color] It would mean so much if they can change the law and get our future children and grand children properly hip checked at birth please please help us. any questions feel free to ask thanks
