tango_kid Posted September 18, 2008 Report Posted September 18, 2008 Hello again, After last time when i thought i might not have enough time to have pigeons the forum has kept bringing me back with further questions that i dont realy want to ask. But here goes. Basicly i think i'd be more interested in racing pigeons as i have a very big competative streak and this sounds like something that could interest me. However, i have been trawling the net for weeks and not been able to find the definative guide to starting racing. For instance do you need to join clubs, how do you train your birds, how much does it all cost and so on and so forth. And i would appreciate it it nobody said find a local fancyer, because i dont find it my sort of thing to find one talk to him for along time and then say sorry i cannot afford it ect. So here are my questions. 1) What equipment do you need? A totaly extensive list please and prices also. 2) How do you set about training racing pigeons and at what distance ect. 3) how often do you fly the pigeons? young birds old birds And stock birds 4) Where do you buy your birds from and how much would they cost. 5) How many birds would you need to get started and how much space would you need as a minimal considering cheapness is the key I think thats it for now but if i think of anything else i will let you know Thanks in advance, Mike.
Guest asha Posted September 18, 2008 Report Posted September 18, 2008 Hi Mike the Kid, Pigeon Racing can be a sport of many pitfalls ,and sometimes heartbreak, and at those times, only a real genuine love of the game will help you survive and funnily enough grow stronger, but a quick psychological profile based on your short posting seems to tell us you could be happier taking a back seat as far as this " hands on" hobby is concerned, just observing from the comfort of your computer chair and keyboard. :-/ Hope you take this the right way,as no offence intended.
just ask me Posted September 18, 2008 Report Posted September 18, 2008 basic equipment clock can pick them here and e bay a second hand t3 should get one for 100 to 150 then feeders drinkers they don't cost much do u even have a loft that the real expensive part the rest can be build up over the year or so baskets to train too every one have there own way of training my self i train at 30 mile maybe 1 or 2 at 50 but a but a few tosses out of 30 mile should do but build them up to 30 mile mark my stock never get out my young and old twice a day but not in the winter i feel there's no need and to many bleeding hawks where to buy ;D thers everywhere lollulla a good place to start as a they are reasonbbly priced and thres allways a few fr sale here and the pigeon mags as regards space ive only a small backyard but u can still compete with the big boys with hard selection every bird has to earn there place
just ask me Posted September 18, 2008 Report Posted September 18, 2008 that just a start on another point ive asked before about a thread being set up and locked for when new fanicers come on as when they come here and see us chatting about diseases and antibiotics it must blow there mind the reason for it being locked so it dont get too complicated just an idea

tango_kid Posted September 18, 2008 Author Report Posted September 18, 2008 And what about clubs, where would i need to join and wha would i need to buy?? Thanks, Mike
Guest bigda Posted September 18, 2008 Report Posted September 18, 2008 i mate to me your are not curious enough to be into pigeons you see most members one here where always around some ones sheds looking at the birds first you have to accept birds for what they are they need fed every day and scraped out every day and watered, its a 360 day job the loft you have them live in has to be water tight and ventilated and not to Manny birds at first and if you don't get that right you are on a down hill slope i would suggest to you get 6 pigeons to look after forget about racing for the year, get the birds to go out and come back in when you whistle on them, never let them sit on the roof, in the sky or in the shed thats the golden rule in keeping neighbors of your back, and the birds in health buy the the British homing world book out every Thursday-Friday and look at lofts in there you will be able to get started for very little as members often offer birds lofts and things for nothing, so start of by going to lofts for a look at listen when they speak to you
Guest Grasshopper Lofts Posted September 18, 2008 Report Posted September 18, 2008 take a look at this on ebay loft needs some work but a lot of stuff is included almost everything you need and more http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/PIGEON-LOFT-PIGEON-CLOCKS-FULL-SET-UP_W0QQitemZ380064466677QQcmdZViewItem?hash=item380064466677&_trkparms=72%3A12|39%3A1|66%3A2|65%3A12|240%3A1318&_trksid=p3286.c0.m14
Guest spin cycle Posted September 18, 2008 Report Posted September 18, 2008 the moment i first walked into a loft i was 'hooked' and it happened quite by accident. i know you don't want to .....but its the best way (find a local fancier). you'll have to find a club anyway you've got to meet fanciers. they'd probably lend you a clock. if you want to start up get a small shed (6 by 4) , a 2ft sputnik and an aviary that will enclose the sputnik while you 'settle' some ybs ( the ybs should be able to come in/out thru' the sputnik sit in aviary having a good look around). inside fix up some box perches against one wall ( box perches are easier to catch birds in than 'V' perches) . fit a louvre vent on a wall low down and have some means of letting stale air out at top (eaves)....when you've done all that you should at least pass woodwork.then return to site and i'm sure some of guys would give you some ybs next year. this set up (imo) should hold about 16 ybs comfortably. get used to looking after birds and get them flying round well before contemplating training. if you do 'sucumb' be prepared to repeat process with bigger sheds for several years to come (dizzy) best of luck
OLDYELLOW Posted September 18, 2008 Report Posted September 18, 2008 one match would sort that out Damian
Guest Grasshopper Lofts Posted September 18, 2008 Report Posted September 18, 2008 one match would sort that out Damian yep agree its bad but alot of stuff with it

If you think the prices quoted are expensive maybe you would be better off with a different hobby as the price of corn has gone through the roof just lately, birds on average £30 upwards a second hand decent loft £400, drinkers, feeders ,nest boxs , perch's care and commitment 365 days per year I could go on the list is long and expensive unless you get to know somebody that keeps and races pigeons that could help you out

jimmy white Posted September 18, 2008 Report Posted September 18, 2008 i see by your past posts ,,tangoboy, your 14 years old say you wouldnt have time to keep fancypigeons,,, if that be so, im afraid you would need more time to keep and race pigeons, as you would soon find out yourself , but if keen enough, can manage anything in the keeping and racing of pigeons , very cheaply indeed ,,,,if you wanted to do this seriously enough, my advice would be to visit all your local pigeon shows which are held in the winter,, get to know as many fanciers as possible , get chatting to them , ask them the questions youve asked here ,, youll find the keener they see you , the more they will help,,and the more info you will receive i.e clubs in your area etc,, study all the pages of pigeon basics , youll find a lot of your answers there , so in the meantime best of luck , and hope to see you with a loft of pigeons soon ,,,,,theres a few young lads racing pigeons , members of pigeon basics,, seek these lads out , befreind them, and find out from them how they managed it etc ,,you can do anything you want if you really try
OLDYELLOW Posted September 18, 2008 Report Posted September 18, 2008 i could reply to that she may knock him off his feet
OLDYELLOW Posted September 18, 2008 Report Posted September 18, 2008 well if your 14 go find local pigeon keepers talk to them ask if any of members need a hand go get some experience and if not for you , you'l know soon enough , if you have been biten by the pigeon bug then you'd do everything to make it happen
