i let the cock out again and he went straight in and started fighting with the hen on her eggs.why would he be doing this when he has a hen sitting on eggs?

 

Sounds as if the cock has claimed this box as his own. When faced with this in the past, basically locked the hen in the box to stop the other cock getting at her, opening up only long enough to let her mate changeover with her, then lock him in too. Means you need food, water and a grit mixture in the box.
